I just learned of the passing of Pat Devery a a Fartown legend although I never saw him play I was always told great stories by my Grandad and Dad about the likes of Devery ,Cooper ,Hunter and that great team from the 50s. I think Pat was the last living member of the 1953 cup winning team our thoughts are with his family a great man.

Exactly the same! I believe he was a school teacher as well as a rugby player of immense talent , or so my Grandad told me. No player could ever hold up to those greats in his eyes, will we be the same with Brough and McGillvary? :)

The last of the surviving players who have tasted the sweet smell of success in a claret and gold jersey.

Sad how long since we won a major trophy.

He was a great player ina great team in the 50s.

A Huddersfield legend and hall of famer. I don’t have his stats handy but was very very influential for Huddersfield back in the day. My Dad was lucky enough to see him play wish I had seen that team as well.

My Father introduced me to RL in 1949 so I was lucky to be able to watch Devery ,Cooper,Hunter along with Henderson, Valentine, Cracknell great players and great games.I am proud to say I am still a Fartow supporter after all these years.
Rest in peace Dev along with all your old team mates

Echoing the sentiments above, my grandad believed Pat Devery to be the best centre he ever saw.

He never did anything dirty or questionable on the pitch - he didn't need to. As Ken says in the obituaries, a real gentleman. Whilst (far!) too young to have witnessed his talents on the pitch, I can testify to this. When we were first promoted to the Super League Mr Devery was in the country and took time out of his schedule to visit my terminally ill grandad. We still treasure the card he wrote for him.

Thank you Mr Devery.
How do you tell a communist? Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin.
