Was announced before stef Ratchford’s testimonial tonight. In shock. I grew up watching Dessie. What a tough, tough man. The way he flew in off his wing to smash his opposition centre was borderline illegal. Searing pace too of course, the only man I ever saw who caught Martin offiah from behind. Incredible athlete, taken far too young. RIP mate, thanks for everything.

Offiah played until 1987, Des started playing in 1976.

One of the games underrated players, one of the best wingers we've produced, and one of the quickest athletes. He had Olympic level speed.

Yes that’s the point I’m making. I saw all his Leigh matches, but never saw him catch Offiah.

seen quite a few homage pieces written about him in the press this last week - and quite a few of the journalists have made that claim.

My best memory of Des is on the 1984 lions tour.
The Schofield try in the first test showed what Des could do. Running through 7 players to give the ball to Schofield under the post.
