I would have liked to have seen a programme going down the route of SKY's Fantasy Football Club, having some legend ex pro's on telling tales and some special guest segments. Get the legends' 1 to 13 's from players they played with back in the day obviously mixed in with highlights from the previous weekends games and previews of upcoming events. Boots n' All had just run its course but i see no reason why we couldn't have a new show going in a new direction without the usual Eddie, Stevo etc.. too of course.

There is nothing to stop the RFL producing its own magazine show and selling it to SKY/PremierSports/BBC if they feel there is an audience for it.

As so much content is online now, do we really need a weekly round up of news/views on TV?

Good god yes. People very much pick and choose what they watch online.
With RL stuff online, I'm willing to bet it's almost exclusively strong RL people who would watch it.
TV gets us to other people.

I would imagine that the audience of Boots n All was almost exclusively hardcore RL fans. I doubt many people were scanning the TV guide at 8pm on a Wednesday and decided to give Boots n All a go if they were not RL fans.

Boots n All used to be good when it was the only chance you got to see the highlights from the previous weekend and it had exclusive previews of the coming weekend games with interviews etc...

All the highlights are done in a separate program/available online; and all the other content filler stuff is available online on individual club websites, social media, BBC online and SKY website.

Who wants to wait 6 days until Wednesday to hear what Phil Clarke thinks of Castleford's 2nd try from the previous Thursday, when 2 minutes after it happened you can get instant reaction on the internet from around the world.

with all due respect, i don't give a tosh about other people's opinion on rl outside its hardcore fans, i pay through the nose for the SKY product primarily for my RL as far as sports go and expect a better return on it, whilst also having to endure plenty of garbage i wouldn't bat an eyelid at.They see fit to have plenty of magazine/build up shows for other sports including this past month a full channel dedicated to American Bloody Football!! Whether you are, or were a fan of boots n all or not you have to agree we should get at least a show or two covering the sport outside the live games? they have 5/6 channels 24/7 for crying out loud! I agree Boots n All was way past its sell by date, hell the whole RL coverage is long in the tooth these days but surely it can't be that hard to invest in a new concept and update things a bit.

It had rightly moved away from the games themselves ie highlights. It can talk about incidents and issues in the game, like for instance Paul Rowley and Leigh, or Wayne Bennett as the new England coach. Or it can look at issues in the amateur game, or at funding of clubs etc it has the full breadth of RL to talk about.

I'm sure the audience probably was predominately hardcore RL fans, but there's far more chance of non-hardcore fans/general interest people watching it on TV rather than online. It also gives RL another little nudge into the consciousness of people when they see it on the TV guide than if it's missing entirely. That kind of gradual, drip-drip effect is one RL has to utilise if it wants to increase its profile. It's partly why we never gain any traction, we have odd flurries of activity and publicity (GF/CF and internationals) and then absolutely nothing. For 10 months of the year people barely know RL exists.
To further retreat on to the active-choice modem that the internet is would not help us at all.

Some might look at this as being harsh but I think it's fair. When are the Rugby League going to stop persisting with this fantasy expansion. If it hasn't worked by now, it never will! I'm all for reaching out to a wider audience with our game but not at the expense of historical clubs in the homelands.

You sound like one of the Tory ministers trying to scrap half the BBC services. Yes, we do need TV coverage, especially when other sports have seen a huge increase. As mentioned, Sky just dedicated an entire channel to American Football for a week. I watched it for a while yesterday and it was literally just showing action montages with no context. Yet they can no longer find the time to show SL match replays or have an hour-long SL Fulltime, which are things that we took for granted just two years ago. There was again no mention of yesterday's SL matches on Sky Sports News, they didn't show highlights or even read out the results and resorted to repeating old football/NFL content rather than talking about RL. It's not like they didn't have anything to show or talk about because the highlights were readily available on the Sky Sports website. It's so obvious that there's an ongoing, deliberate effort from someone within Sky to phase out RL content.

Do we? Probably not. But we are still trying to aim to a wider audience and I'll bet a magazine show reaches that more than a few thirty second videos do online.

Lack of media presence continues to ensure we're perceived as a small sport and gives the impression we're not worth covering. Surely this shouldn't need pointing out?

Re: Sky season preview ? : Wed Feb 10, 2016 12:42 pm
I share the concerns re lack of non-game coverage and there is definitely room for something. There is a distinct lack of interest and now that Sky have a long term contract I see no reason for this to change unfortunately. They can just cover the games as cheaply as possible with the same 7/8 on screen cronies. A combined SL & NRL highlights package would be more than welcome but I think I'd even rather go without than listen to the ramblings of Eddie and Stevo any more than I already do.

It's hard to justify paying for the Sky Sports package at the moment and I am about to cancel it myself although I'm fortunate enough to catch the majority of the live coverage anyway.
