Agreed; he's had nearly 30 1st team games, which is more chances than many others have been given.

How many of those in his preferred position of centre? Play McIllorum on the wing and see if he impresses.

He's had games in dribs and drabs, played mainly out on the wing. I remember reading a NZ Warriors forum who we're discussing Gelling's form for the Auckland Vulcans and they thought he was actually a second row rather then a centre. I'm comfortable he actually is a centre but I don't think anybody can claim he's had a fair crack of the whip in that position.

Stats may prove me wrong but I'd be surprised if he's played more then 6 or 7 games at centre and I don't recall him ever having a sustained run there.

But has he done enough to warrant getting a sustained run at centre? He had a spell of about 5 games there last season and seemed to back up one very good performance with a below par one. I've also been told his attitude isn't the best, I know a couple of people who went to a first team coaching session a couple of seasons ago and they said gelling was messing about all through it. He's clearly not showing enough in training to warrant selection, and even with how light we are in the SR he's never been given a game there, so the coaching staff clearly don't see him as a forward.

I've been reasonably impressed with him when he's played but he's clearly not a winger and seems to lack concentration. That concentration issue could well tie in with what your saying about him in training. He's had disciplinary issues in the past and I'd agree that if he's not training well enough he shouldn't be picked.

The culture at the club won't allow for that nowadays so you may be right.
