Steve Price's blind spot ? : Sat Jun 29, 2019 11:10 am
Looking at the forwards that give us decent go forward with ball in hand I would say we only have Hill and Cooper. BMM and Akuaola are short period impact players, Jason Clark may well do a lot of tackling but he makes little ground with the ball. For what we must be paying him that seems like an expensive indulgence. Lama Tasi has little impact whilst Matt Davis can make decent ground, but in the same way a HB would make sniping runs. So when we look at our ability to front up and make consistent 10m plus yardage over a 40 minute period we only have Hill and Cooper.

Why then do we not recruit in the forwards and release an impact player ? I can't understand Price's thinking on this. We are already short of a strike forward of the bench, but what would he do if Hill had a lengthy injury ?

We played our best rugby when we had 4 high quality props ie the likes of morley, carvel, Cooper, Wood and even Hill first season or so. We also had a peak Ben Westwood. I think there is something in this, we need another quality prop, tasi should go. Philbin and sita can stay for me but we need another. Interesting to see where we recruit for next season.

I thought Hill looked more like his.old self yesterday, he ran himself to a standstill.

But for.me we have too much caviar and.not enough baked beans. BMM & Akuola are luxury players and we can't have both. Tasi strikes me as a gamble signing that hasn't paid off.

With Westwood seeingly done, we are short on grunt.

We need to find a Bob Jackson, Danny Nutley type player and hope he's got a twin brother.

He needs to sort it out in the off season. Next season is his 3rd full season in charge so no excuses about squad make up. Everyone we can see we are a big prop short, or 2 if we think the jury is out on Philbin which to be fair it probably is.

The other blindspot is the underperformance of our 6 and 7 partnership. We scored 1 try against Saints and that was a fluke (albeit amazing pace and skill from Mamo).

Said right at the start of the season we are a prop short. We haven't even tried to replace G King.
King had more than his share of knockers...Ahem...but at the last 6 weeks of the season he was arguably our best prop.

I would think with the players out of contract/leaving we ought to be able to afford a big handy prop. New half-back (sorted), centre (maybe sorted) & prop please at the least.
Also think we should retain Sitaleka Ak.

Perhaps more importantly , the coaches & players should study what makes each referee tick then bend the rules accordingly. That seems an ideal way of gaining a playing advantage as some of our rivals already know.

BMM has been disappointing, time for replacing. I still think Ben Westwood can do a job, and wonder why he hasn't been given a go (perhaps there will still be an opportunity or two. As we haven't seen him for a while, I'd be surprised if we see him in 2020. Jason Clark and Matt Davis are too similar to have in the same 17 for me, as they're not heavy yardage makers. Goodwin is leaving and most likely Atkins, and both will need replacing in the squad.

As Widdop's shoulder is a gamble, I'd be looking to bring in another half, a prop, second row and a centre, to replace Westwood, Atkins, Goodwin and BMM.

If London go down I'd be straight in for Jordan Abdull.

Great kicking game, sweet hands, directs play around well and an eye for a gap.

No question. He's contracted to KR next season though....better loan London some players to balance things out...then get him.
