Let's break it down.

Two issues of money.
1) wages, what can or will be paid to a player
2) money paid to sign a player.

With the marquee spot we can literally pay a player whatever.
With a transfer we can literally pay a club whatever to sign said player.

So to say we can't be in to sign Tapau isn't right. I think you might have missed the earlier posters post regarding why it would we couldn't be in for Marty if we can't keep Bateman.

I’ve been back over the last few pages and in my original comment, I was agreeing with you that it wasn’t about wages. Perhaps I should have worded it differently? I’d also commented early in the thread that we could get T’Pau but only in our wildest dreams. Not because we can’t pay him marquee wages but because he could probably go wherever he wants in the NRL. Anyway, I’ll put this one down to a misunderstanding and believe me, I’ve got far better things to do than argue on a forum for the sake of it. I’ll not be commenting on this issue again.

This is exactly what the Marquee rule shouldn’t be be used for unless the players are consistently putting in marquee performances.

The danger is you use it to retain a player.

Pay a player what they are worth not what he wants to stay.

Williams has never put in marquee performances but rather than lose him we have him marquee money. Tomkins was marquee prior to his spell in the NEL but was damaged goods which the club knew when they signed him but again a marquee contract was offered.

Bateman is a very good player but not marquee standard in my opinion.

You need to get value from the cap manipulate it to achieve that. We in real terms don’t have any marquee players in the squad but are currently paying for 2 because we didn’t want to lose them.

Hastings should go really well in superleague if he keeps out of trouble. I’d always like Wigan to be interested in quality players but I’m not sure he is what we need as I think we need a game manager with a good long kicking game. He could maybe work if Tommy retires and Williams moves to hooker?

The worry with Hastings is that he’ll be a bit if a Tim Smith style bad influence. It sounds like they’re desperate to get him out of the Manly dressing room.

I read today Blake Austin is available and Leeds are making a big play for him. I can’t admit to knowing a great deal about him other then reading that he’s a good player.

He's a much better player than Hastings, that's for sure!

But whether he's what we need... his strength is very much his running game; he's a George Williams-type player (by which I mean GW in his better days! )
