It seems pretty obvious to me that given we have Powell, Williams, Tomkins and Escare one of them is going to be the best 6, one the best 7 and one the best full back. So whenever Wane doesn't play the best in each position we are operating at below optimum. I don't see why it matters if it works when the sub-optimum line up is on the pitch, it ought to work even better with the best line up on the pitch.

Whoever isn't the best in any of those three positions either needs to be interchange hooker with TL or simply drop out of the team then we can have our best players in these key positions and Wane can make better use of the bench not tieing up a bench spot so he can do his switcheroo.

Ah, good taste!
What a dreadful thing!
Taste is the enemy of creativeness.

Re: The "Switcheroo" : Tue Mar 13, 2018 10:36 pm
just a thought - but perhaps the point of the switcheroo has been to gauge what the best combination is, and then to settle with it?
Sun worked pretty well, so lets see if we stick with that for a while.
My biggest worry so far, is that whilst Sam has been consistently decent, the other 3 starters have been pretty average all round (all playing below their potential without being bad).

Re: The "Switcheroo" : Tue Mar 13, 2018 11:05 pm
It’s probably making the most of what we have currently or more to the point what we don’t have. That is a proper scrum half who can get the team around the field with a good passing and kicking game and by showing some organisational skills.

Players like Tomkins but even more so Williams and Escare are crying out for that. I think Leuluai has been much improved at hooker and Powell has been pretty good in that position as well with both contributing some sharp assists close to the opposition line.

We needed a scrum half and two props in the off season and we still need them now. The league is weak enough and we look motivated enough to have a pretty decent season but we still need those three players.

Who was the last decent long kicker we had? Smith was alright but for every decent kick he did 5 awful ones. Probably Paul Deacon 8 years ago?

Even then, by that point I don't remember that many being great kicks.

I'm honestly struggling to think of the last player we had who was anywhere near the likes of Sinfield, Gale or Sneyd in terms of long kicking and 40/20s etc.

Although some of Gale's 40/20 kicks must be put down to just how small the pitch is at the jungle.

SAINTS THE ORIGINAL AND PERENNIAL CHEATS

For sale full Saints kit (circa 1989). Shirts in pristine condition, but shorts badly soiled.

For 27 - 0 you get a trophy
For 75 - 0 you get sod all.

Wigan had eight in a row
Saints have five in a row

2013 with Matty Smith and Blake Green we kicked more 40/20's than any other team.
We haven't kicked one since Smith left.

Is that not partly tactics though? We seem to prefer to keep the ball in play and back our fitness.

The switcheroo seems to be catching on.

Leeds v Cas tonight, for Leeds Golding started at FB, moved to hooker when walker came on. For Cas Roberts started at FB and moved to stand off when Trueman came on for Ellis.
