Re: Gelling and McLlorum. : Wed Jan 03, 2018 8:59 am
Mickey Mac may be a thug but I'd have him in a Wire team any day of the week. Hard as nails, uncompromising, leads for the front, no regard for his own safety and has the right amount of "C U Next Tuesday" in him that teams need. We need a few more players with that uncompromising nature. We have Westwood currently who is at the end of his career. we were at our best when we had Morley, Westwood & Bridge. Add that to the like of not niggley players but still hard as nails Carvell, Paul Wood, the Andersons and Co. We had the toughest squad in the league for a short time.

We never replaced those old school style of players. We could do with a Mickey Mac in our team 100%.

Sargonson for Gelling probably isn't a great loss, they lose a bit of unpredictability, but gain some consistency. Losing McColorium means they miss a bit of bite in midfield, but if they utilise Leiluia at 9 and Tomkins at 7, I don't think they are losing too much quality.

Their props need to stand up big time in 2018 though, if they are to stand a chance.

The rumour has it no one - the McIlorum move has been forced because they have now taken on FPN's contract full time (previously Raiders were still paying a cut) and they haven't been able to release him as they had hoped.

Gelling has already been replaced by Sarginson.

I am going to say that losing McIlorum means more than just losing a bit of bite in midfield. He had a mongrel/steel in him that used to intimidate most prop forwards. He had the heart of a Lion and did not worry about his own welfare. When the chips were down, he never died wondering. Having Tommy L at 9 and Tomkins at 7 will not replace this. He will be a big loss for the pies.

That's pretty much what I meant when I said 'a bit of bite' the way I phrased it probably looked like I was down playing it a bit - but that's why I feel their props need to step up in 2018.

I'd say thats a net loss, however its terrible asset management.

I think it's good business.
Pies had a shat season last year. Some new blood is/was needed.

Like us getting shut of Gleeson for his reasons opened a few eyes...it was great business imo.

MM is little different to us with Mick Higham...is it better to let a player go a season too early or a possible season too late?

I think they need the money behind the scenes!
