Early 70's is getting a bit out of my memory zone but looking at the tables the top clubs were a bit less dominant and the trophies were shared around a bit more than they are today Saints, Salford and Featherstone were among the best. Furthermore the best players seemed to be more evenly distributed throughout the league and you could find some really good individuals in mediocre teams. Certainly you didn't get scenarios where one club dominated representative selections taking up more than half the team, though perhaps the selection process was less sophisticated. Also the players were part timers, player movement was far more restricted as there was no free agency, and I doubt their was enough cash around to give players compelling financial inducements to move so they didn't all gravitate to the big clubs like they do now.

and all done with no salary cap as well. probably the clubs were more even back then beacuase all of them had s*d all money
