Super League have today released an interview with Henderson Gill as part of Black History Month.

THE number one reason I became a Wigan fan back in 1982, I saw him play that first game and he mesmerised by him, I was hooked.

Henderson was certainly singled out for some appalling treatment at certain opposition grounds. I could name the worst offenders now, but it wouldn't serve any purpose as times and people have changed.

Dwelling on the positives, he was one of the first real stars to emerge at Wigan in the 1980s. After the depressing closing years of the 1970s, it was an absolute joy to see a player of that quality back in cherry and white.

'Do you remember when we had that meeting in Orlando? We talked about how we were knocked out the previous year by Leeds. And at the end, I asked you one question. "Do you want to be a semi-final team? Or do you want to do something special?" You all said you wanted to win. But talking is easy – it needed you to believe. It needed you to work hard – harder than you had – and make sacrifices. You did all that. you worked for each other. You stuck together when it was tough. And because of your efforts, you sit here tonight as champions. I'm proud of you. Be proud of yourselves. You've done something special.'

Shaun Wane's post-Grand Final speech. 5th October 2013.

I really hope that when the new season starts and hopefully the bar in Robin Park Arena reopens then the club can bring in popular former players such as Henderson to speak pre-match. We had a period of five games with Andy Greg (bless him tries his best), but needs mixing it up a bit.

Gilly speaking pre-match and giving photo opportunities would fill the place out, no doubt about it.

Couldn't believe we sold him to Hornets and he had his best years with you guys. At least he came back to Bradford for a brief swan song. Such a likeable bloke and in his Wigan days he was one of the best in the world.

Warrington was always the worst for the racial abuse that Henderson and Ellery suffered, they had their own black player in Des Drummond but that never stopped them from chucking bananas on the pitch.Although it's not as bad as it was it's still bubbling away under the surface

Great idea.

I’ve never met Gilly but I believe that he is a real gent and quite a funny guy.
I’d love to meet him and have a photo with him. I know that my grandson would love it too.
One of my all time favourite players. A fantastic winger and a true entertainer.
