I’d agree with that 100%. I’d rather both but I’d choose your option as well. I’d also choose somebody like Tom Davies coming back on a 4 year deal over French for another year but it’s doubtful a lad like that is available (although it’s strange that Catalans are carrying 3 starting wingers in their squad next season).

Ultimately if Wigan have searched the market to see what works best and they think another year of French is the best option, I’m more than happy with that. We’ve been bored to tears the last couple of seasons and another year of Field and French in the same side is something I’ll look forward to.

I understand Cats running with 3 front line wingers as there is a good chance Johnstone will miss a number of games with injury.

I’d be over the moon with French on a rolling contract and Wardle on a 3 year deal or 2 with an option.

I’m trying not to overlook this year but it’s hard not to get excited about next year with the way things appear to be shaping up.

I could understand it if they had Johnstone and they then signed a third one but bringing him in on top of two good starting wingers doesn’t make as much sense. Ultimately they can offer more beneficial contracts than other clubs (bar Toulouse), so if you can afford it then why not I suppose. He is potentially better than what they have by a decent way.

Warrington shouldn’t be gambling and he’s a huge one. He could go either way but you’d be far from surprised if he’s coming over for a drinking holiday.
