The money issue isn't with Bateman wanting x amount of money, it's about Canberra not willing to pay the pre-contracted amount to release Bateman early from his contract. Two completely different things.

I never said that was the deciding factor, just that Canberra have offered him an unbelievably deal that we couldnt get near. Tapau will want more than the offer Bateman is considering so we cant get anywhere near it.

Why couldn't we go near it? We have a marquee spot which means we can offer him whatever with only minimal showing on the cap.
Bateman isn't going for money, it's for the opportunity to experience Aus and test himself in the world's best league.

IL is reluctant to pay wages that outreach the club's income. So whilst it is feasible to pay someone a ludicrous wage, it probably won't happen because we can't afford it.

Can and will are too different things. People have questioned the use of the marquee (using it to keep young talent i.e. Williams) this is exactly what the marquee is there for, to entice top tier talent. potentially, we can be in for whoever using the marquee spot.
