They would with many but I think this lad is good enough to overcome the hurdles he’ll face (demanding fan base, high pressure, a coach who will drop young players at the first sign of trouble and so on). If this kid can’t crack it at Warrington, there really is no hope for them in terms of developing young players because he’s pretty much there in terms of being ready for first team rugby.

I can understand that he wants to be promoted and that at Wigan the second rows are likely to be set for at least two years. I like that a youngster might be confident enough in their own ability to push for a place but we all know that the best at this age will not always make it and need careful handling and support. We have had plenty of good young players who have taken their own course and nothing is certain. We just have to hope that the production line is still working and that N'semba or one of the others is ready to step up.

I agree 100% with your last paragraph NK but I'm still bitterly disappointed with the loss of such potential.
Rushton, Nicholson and it sounds like KPP from 2024 for me, are huge losses to the club.
Not sure how we stem this in the future re losses to the NRL but to lose a potential "special one" to a nearby foe is even more disappointing.
I remember saying to my lads at Spurs that there were a few young lads joining in the celebrations at the end but I couldn't see Nicholson but that may have been due to my ale goggles rather than him not being there.

Looking at 2024 without any new signings potentially our starting backrow will be Farrell, Bateman plus Shorrocks or Smithies. For me this too lighweight and backups will be Nsemba and maybe McDonnell assuming that Isa and KPP will exit.
I know that Nsemba is rated very highly within the club but when I've seen him (primarily on Wigan TV) his seems to lack that little bit of a dog that most top rated players have. McDonnell was the "fringe" player that I expected to kick on this year but that hasn't occurred and I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that he may be leaving at the end of his current contract.
Obviously Peet has time to bring in fresh faces and I'm quite sure he will bring in the right players but there are no guarantees on any future signings.

Harrison is very entertaining but for all the wrong reasons on his podcast appearances.

Stopping players moving to the NRL is almost impossible. But it should be possible to soften the blow by inserting realistic compensation deals into the arrangement. Unfortunately, It would need international agreement and I don’t see the Australian’s signing up to it. Likewise, the RFL could raise the level of compensation so that it would far better reflect the time and effort a club puts into developing a player. I would like to see amateur clubs receive payments for players who sign professional terms and in the case of academy players, who transfer to another club, a realistic level of compensation should be paid. We have got to get to the point where all SL clubs have a thriving academy set-up if the game is to flourish. This should have been the number one priority with regard to Framing the Future.

But he will only be going into the Wire squad in 2023 which, suggests one of two things: they are operating at the cap level or they are bringing another player in this season. If it is the former, they are going to have to shift a lot of players if their proposed recruitment is to come off.

Very likely that Widdop, Hughes, Davis, Doro, Mulhern will be leaving on top of those who have already left (Butler, Robson, Magoulias, Charnley) and due to leave Cooper and Jason Clark.

Also Toby King’s loan could turn into a permanent move.

Fair enough but given that the four players you have mentioned have already left then why can Nicholson go immediately into the squad? It would suggest that they have left to balance the books in 2022. If Wire bring in the players that are rumoured to be signing for 2023 then they will need to move a few more on (in addition to those you have listed). That's without taking into consideration the upgrade in contracts.

He's probably seen the post saying he's back in the UK for family matters.

Ben Kilner has tweeted saying he misses rugby. We reckon he could come back? It sounded like he left due to injury and falling behind in his development but a year out might have helped. He was meant to be the next lad out of the academy before he left

I would imagine that Wigan still hold his registration.
