The worst thing about the 2005 season was the ridiculous numbering system, were the players were numbered in alphabetical order leading to props having 3 and 4 on their shirts and backs with 8 and 10-totally unprofessional from the start.

If what you say is true, Mr C (and as Bongser doesn't know you personally, he has no solid reason to doubt your word), surely a company paying off an employee's mortgage would be viewed by HMRC as making a payment in kind and that that would therefore be taxable. Does the RFL not view that sort of thing in the same light?

Bongser may be in search of his marbles but he thinks that, if that is the case, things have come a long way since offering signees a wage and a guaranteed window round! Could Leigh (or any other club that has money still in the "boot") not therefore sign a top player for a tuppence 'apenny salary and employ his good missus to sell programmes on matchdays only for £100k a year with a 35 day per annum holiday allowance?

I believe that such loopholes in the SC have long since been closed. I refer you to A.5.2.1 (c) below, from the R|FL Salary Cap SL rules on what is to be included in said SC calculation: -

A. General Principles
5.2 Wherever salary or other benefits are expressed as being paid, payable or Accruing:
5.2.1 “to a Player”, such expression will be deemed to include payments that are paid, payable or Accrue:
(a) to the Player himself;
(b) for the benefit of the Player;
(c) to, or for the benefit of, the spouse, partner, relative or trustee of the Player;
(d) to, or for the benefit of, any person or business entity associated directly or indirectly with the Player;
(e) in satisfaction of all or part of a debt owed by the Player;
(f) to, or for the benefit of, a Licensed Player Agent or other Agent for services rendered on behalf of the Player;
(g) at, or pursuant to, the direction of the Player; and/or
(h) such other transactions as the HSCR determines should be treated as payments to a Player;

Mind you I also may be in search of the elusive marbles!!

I thought they could pay him a bonus payment when signing which adds to the SC in incriments,dependant on the length of contract.

Right,so Warrington didn't really pay his mortgage off,they acquired the asset.They bought his house.

I'm not aware of the legalities myself,could be deemed as using a third party (mortgage company) to disguise payment.But seeing as it would be the clubs asset/debt it doesn't involve the player..Interesting.
