He refers to himself being shafted rather than not being good enough to secure a place

I seem to recall a Canberra supporter saying he had a history of starting off at a new club like a house on fire and then declining, which seems a fair assessment of his time with us albeit injury played it’s part.
I definitely think we need Ratch at fullback against him though as his “bombs” are wicked and virtually unplayable at times.
Just my opinions unless it's a FACT, in which case it's a fact.

Given the amount of money we were paying him, it’s fair to say he shafted us, especially in the last 2 years.

He just wasn’t good enough for the marquee money in years 2 & 3. He saw out his contract at the end of the day, not like we forced him out of the club so shafted is taking it a bit far imo. Williams & Widdop are far better options.

I can see where he's coming from with that. He had a couple of spells at Warrington when he looked pretty good. His first year was a success overall and there were spells after that as well, but as with the rest of the team it just fell away at times too. It felt as though he was the scapegoat because he was a marquee player, when in reality the lack of a truly competitive pack was what was costing you. This is supported by the lack of impact Widdop and Williams had.

I'd imagine he'll look good again next season, with a better pack at Leeds and a competent organising halfback alongside him to take the pressure off and let him just play off the cuff.

Those who get paid more do seem to get more stick. I tend to agree that he could find life easier at Leeds. He should never have been used as an organiser but sometimes needs must. His tries in the first half of his first season were pretty special. I think he never lacked effort and sometimes he tried too hard.

I liked his bombs and his step but it wasn’t worth £300k+ a year, unfortunately. I thought Widdop’s overall contribution last year put Austin in the shade. Widdop is a more creative all-round player. But even with less organising responsibility, Austin seemed to have been found out by other clubs’ defences. I agree we’ll need to be careful with the bombs though.

“I think they obviously made the decision for George (Williams) to come in. I thought I was playing some pretty decent footy in the mid section of last year and, without sounding blunt, to be shafted the way I was was a little bit disappointing.

Which point last mid-season was the decent footy? I don’t remember him standing out at any point last year? Not a dig, a genuine question.

The club moving heaven and Earth to get the guy who is replacing you must be a bit of a blow to the ego.

He was good but not good enough.

During parts of certainly his first season he was unplayable at time and a joy to watch. Hampered by injury to a degree he rarely hit the same heights consistently in seasons 2 and 3. Personally, I wish him well at Leeds and will remember him for the good times.

He didn't get shafted at all, we'll see how he does at Leeds :-)

I just don't see how he benefits by making that remark. It clearly still rankles with him or why else say it?
