Any reason Widdop is rested? Thought Austin would be the one to get a break with his leg issue.

He only picked up a dead leg, that’s why he played last week.

The call is who is better at fb. Thewlis or Ashton? For the all round game Thewis, for raw speed Ashton.
Think I’d rather go Thewis FB, Ashton wing, rest Charnley.

Although we are in a very fortunate position having two young talented players, it is also a tricky one to manage. Ashton’s contract is up this year and, if he sees he is behind both Ratchford and Thewlis, he could well go to a rival. On the other hand, if Thewlis can’t see a future because Ratchford and Ashton are blocking his path then he could a better future elsewhere. I am sure other contributors have seen more of Thewlis than I have and I have been been more than impressed but would also make the point that he is not yet 18. Hopefully, Powell can resolve this probably by using Ratchford in utility roles.

I think if Price was staying and I was Thewliss I would have gone by now. Ashton is still very raw so I can see the dilemma of playing him in critical games where he could make a mistake and lose the game for you. But I would say his potential is greater than Thewliss, who is close to a finished professional but simply lacking regular games in SL. I have some sympathy for Price in that he is under pressure to get results. He has no track record and I suspect gets bullied into some team choices. But the academy players need game time and a coach needs to carry these players to get the long term benefit. Perhaps that is another problem in that he knew he was only over here for three years.

I would guess Powell has already looked at our squad, he will in any case already know most of them very well. Presumably we will find out quite quickly who will be leaving from the core. I hope he looks carefully at the Academy players, although if they don't get any game time that might be a tad more difficult.

You look at ashton/thewlis, you get a parallel (sort of) of when penny and Riley came through.

You've got the inexperienced poop off a shovel kid, and the good but steady kid that's probably better all round.

Probably not a bad comparison, I think Powell will find a way to get both in the team eventually, it is very early for thewlis yet but then again he does look good enough so age shouldn't really matter too much. I'd also say both thewlis and Ashton are better prospects than penny and Riley were, Ashton having scored a shed load of tries at championship and superleague already. Thewlis having 2 MOM awards from his 3 games so far. Both are really good players to have in the ranks and great prospects to be stable first team players over the next decade.

If both play today I think they will play well and still be dropped next week, we played our best last year with Ashton in the team, we need to find a way to fit him back in again IMO.

Ashton has more of a rugby background than Penny famously did. Is Ashton faster than Penny? I think he probably is, but I still remember the early in and out tries from Penny. Fabulous.

I've not seen enough of Thewlis to comment on him really other than to say he has never disappointed.

I still see Ashton as a special talent though even if that is just his speed. He's exciting and, lordy, Super League hasn't got much of that nowadays, never mind us.

Thewliss is four years younger than Ashton.

His peer is young Hanley at Wigan - how does Thewliss compare in his development with him? I know who I think looks the better player right now and prospect for the future.

If he can’t get a game against the mighty Swinton though what’s the point in him being here? Price really doesn’t help himself at times.

I'd imagine he's not playing him so you can moan about it. Mind you if he picked him at fullback you'd moan that Ashton hadn't been picked. At least you can moan that Inglis hasn't played yet.

Well its better than your blind faith thinking Wire can do no wrong.

We could appoint Mr Bean as head coach and you’d defend that.
