Karl's Interview : Thu Dec 03, 2020 8:37 am
https://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/ne ... 4z2prlrv3Y

All i see jumping out is

"Hull had a bigger bench and that hurt us"

"We are bad in attack"

"We need a prop to do more than 10 mins"

"Water is wet"

Delusion, denial and inertia.

The attacking structures aren't working
The half back partnership isn't working
Our recruitment hasn't worked

But we aren't going to change any of the people or processes that caused these, we're going to hope it magically resolves itself.

Oh, by the way Karl, the defence Wigan and Saints were producing in the final month of the season was light years ahead of ours.

Just copy and paste it from the last two years.

'It's not been good enough, Steve's a honest bloke blah blah blah' but we're not going to do anything about it.

'We're going to be stronger next year'.

I could have predicted these quotes before seeing them. Talk is very cheap and actions speak louder.

Unebliable position to be in with Widdop btw, should a club be in a position where they are saying they aren't sure if a player is coming back or not? If he wants to leave, (he does), release him.

The comment about Hull's bench is staggering and if he thinks that he would have been better discussing it with Price privately rather than making a public statement.

As for the Widdop situation, he can come back if he likes (apparently) but then that won't address the high profile half back combination he says isn't working.

Strange comments.

(Admittedly the views of an outsider looking in).

Re: Karl's Interview : Thu Dec 03, 2020 9:51 am
My take from that was slightly different;

1. Our attacking performance was nowhere near good enough and Price is responsible for it.

2. We have not recruited the props we need, but I am not admitting that recruitment is my responsibility.

3. Widdop will leave if he gets the opportunity.

So it's everything that we already know but at least he is getting close to being honest about it.

For comparison here's his interview at the end of 2019

https://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/ne ... ead-coach/

A number of quotes jump out

"I don’t think our defence was a major problem, it was just our ability to unlock the opposition’s defence.

That’s something we need to look at next year and it’s something that will be addressed by the coaching staff."

"We certainly have to look at what we’re doing with the ball. We need to ask more questions of the defence."

"Supporters are entitled to their opinion, but if you look at his record, he has got us to three finals in two years and has won one of them as raging underdogs. It is some achievement." We can now add 2020 onto that record

"We’re still in the market for a front rower as we need a bit of firepower up front. We’ve got a quota spot available so we’re looking in that department."

I'll state again, these are as of Nov 2019!

I'll say it now, Steve Price will make Karl lose his job. He's backing the wrong horse

And we signed Widdop to deal with the attack, it didn’t work but I for one was hopeful that was the answer. The prop issue has been rehearsed at length.
It seems to be a straightforward assessment of last season. With regard to the Hull match, we weren’t good enough and they played the game of their season.
If you were expecting him to say “we have sacked Price , and I’m off with him” then you were bound to be disappointed.
So he knows the problems, has he identified the solution is the real question.

Yes, very strange. The size of Hull's bench didn't seem to affect us in March, when we beat them 38-4, or in September, when we beat them 37-12.

He isn't saying anything we don't already know, or anything that Wires supporters, supporters from other clubs, neutrals, pundits and the media havn't been saying for several years.

Our attack is sterile, our half backs don't gel and we're lacking props.

Difference is, he is in a position to do something about it. Honesty is great, and it's gratifying that Price works so hard but at some point there has to be an acceptance that it isn't working, we are flatlining and without action and as the squad ages over the next two years we'll be overtaken by the likes of Hull, Leeds, Catalans and Huddersfield.

I think it's fair to say Hull were shocking on both of those occasions, the first game saw Radford get the sack, the second Hull lost against a very understrength (although in good form at the time) Wire team. They were much better in the play off game and weeks before that were improving,

Whatever Price has said in that interview will have already been discussed with Price i'm sure. Widdop coming in was a good excuse for Price last year, but it's more than having players in positions. The whole attacking structure looks poor and disjointed - that for me is the role of the coaching staff, not the players in the side. Ratchford, Austin, Widdop & Clark is as good a spine as any in SL. More than capable of winning the comp if they had the right pack and attacking structure to work with. KF doesn;t seem to deny the criticism this year - he did last year. I think Price will be on thin ice this year, I hope the club are already sounding out potential successors.

“We need more of that from our middles and that’s what we’re looking for, that aggression.

“If they are big but can only play 10 minutes, they are no good to no-one.

Is obviously referring to Latu and Sita but the 'prop issue' has been with us for years

Crosby, Sita, Latu, Tasi, Dodds and more I've probably forgotten have all come in and delivered nothing for various reasons, we probably have to go back 10 years for a set of 4 props I was happy with, which isn't good enough for a club who wants to win things.

Coaching Team, Recruitment, Junior Scouting & Development are three key areas the club need to improve on.
