Interesting article.

https://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/sp ... cker-2025/

We had the 5th best kick stats last year at 78% (Thewlis' 76% boosted by Ratchford's 88% contribution) but it cost us big time in the Hull KR semi if you recall - losing 10-8 with 2 missed kicks.

It's an area we can improve.

I wonder if we we stick with Thewlis or whether Leyland will get the duties based on his impressive kicking so far?

Whoever has looked best in training I would say. Thewlis’ % was ok last year but can be improved on (we’ve been spoiled in this dept recently with Ratch). Was his first season kicking though after a few years of not practicing by all accounts. I’m sure he will improve, I’d be tempted to stick with him.

Leyland has started his kicking career with us well, but it’s a very small sample size obviously, he was at just under 66% last year - which isn’t great.

Spot on how many times have we seen teams score more try’s and still lose.

Goal kicks don’t win games, tries win games, but a missed kick can lose you one.

If we had a top kicker we may have made the grand final last year. Even if thewlis could have kicked at 50% we would have forced golden point.

Unfortunately Kull KR won the game by a conversion.

I think it will improve this year, we have Leyland added to potential kicking options, and i'm sure it's an area that will be focused on this year.
And yeah it definately is the difference at times between a win or lose.
I don't envy kickers though as it must be stressful, look at Ratchford with the kick that would have given him the record. He'd kicked many over before that from the same angle but fluffed it :-(

76% is a pretty good percentage.

I want a kicker that kicks at 100% but nobody does. Not Sinfield at his peak, not Harry Smith, not Andrew Johns.

We should choose our kicker based on the best technique. A better technique is less likely to falter in a pressure situation. It strikes me that Thewlis has a pretty decent technique. If we stick with him, and his attitude to practice is right through his career, his percentage will get better (as Sinfield's did)
