Its not as easy as having a blood and thunder coach. The same core group of players have failed miserably under three sets of coaches in quick succession (McDermott, Sinfield/Lowes and Furner) and made a disastrous start under a 4th. There's clearly something wrong in terms of fitness and attitude across the squad, but the fact is we're terrible in the spine. Our best fullback is a kid who's also been out a fair amount with injuries, our 'best' halfbacks are a support player in Myler and a second-time round chancer who the club deemed only fit for the forwards a few months ago, and our hookers either only work well with a quick PTB (Parcell) or are too flaky to be relied on week-in-week-out (Dwyer).
That weak spine accentuates issues elsewhere - Briscoe and Handley are hardly the best wingers in SL, Watkins isn't fit yet and our forwards just aren't working together.
Having said all that, if anyone could come in and just get the team to put in a decent shift in defence, we'd at least be hard to beat even with the lack of star quality. As it is the effort isn't there and that's showing us up for being pretty average in far too many positions.
