Turning down a conversion attempt : Thu Feb 21, 2019 12:59 pm  

Is the decision to turn down the chance to kick a conversion and instant decision?

I ask cause at the end of the NEwcastle Doncaster game on Saturday, Thunder scored late on to get back to within 6 points and instead of taking the conversion wanted to kick straight back off. However before they even got back the hooter went. Wondered if Newcastle could have then said, as the game had not restarted, we'll take that kick at goal

To my knowledge once you have made the decision and the referee makes the relevant signal you cannot then change your mind, not that it would have mattered in that game anyway?

When they turned down the conversion the ball became out of play. Hooter went, game over.

If a team decline a conversion attempt, does the clock get stopped?

See that was my other thought, it felt like having turned it down they should have had the right to restart the game (it benefited my team that they didn't though)

No.
Clock stops only if ref calls time off or automatically if video ref decision is asked for or mandatory 1 minute has elapse for goal kicking a conversion.

So, if you are 8 points down with 78.30 on the clock, score a try. There is literally no value in not take the conversion as they team who would kick off would let the clock run down any way?

seems to be a bit odd and no advantage of forgoing the conversion attempt.

i remember Kevin Sinfield in a game maybe Hull at Headingley, the ref gave a penalty about 15m out, the ref asked Kev what are you doing, Kev pointed both hands to the sticks and said to the ref i am taking a tap, the hull players having seen him point to the sticks turned there backs and started walking towards the sticks thinking he was going fro goal, he tapped it ran over and scored much to the dismay of the Hull fans And a few players who realized what he had actually said. CHEEKY.
