Re: Catalans Challenge Cup : Fri Jan 04, 2019 6:00 pm
Having just read part of the RFL's response "We have been surprised and disappointed by the uncertainty over Catalan Dragons participation in the 2019 Challenge Cup, which surfaced before Christmas"

I dont know if anyone knows exactly who came up with the idea for a bond for overseas participants (excluding amateur sides) but, it's time to name and shame whichever clown or clowns came up with this one. It's a bloody disgrace and for a sport which is "famous" for it's innovations (crap ideas) and stupidity, this is as bad as it gets.

Sorry RFL but, this is not acceptable and your stupidity is likely to have a further effect on people not wanting to attend games.

We already have everything slanted in favour of the 12 (or 11) SL clubs and with Catalan, Toronto and Toulouse all dropping out, w've "eliminated 3 of the top 26 clubs, approx 10% of professional clubs that take part. Someone at HQ really needs to get a grip on this and quickly.

Also with Toronto and Toulouse dropping out, they give themselves an advantage in the promotion chase as they will play fewer games and keep their squad's fresh - it's just wrong.

Re: Catalans Challenge Cup : Fri Jan 04, 2019 6:33 pm
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-league/46763920

Challenge Cup holders Catalans Dragons are considering their place in the 2019 competition after being ordered to pay a £500,000 deposit to enter.
The French club became the first team from outside England to win rugby league's oldest trophy.
Catalans have asked the Rugby Football League to "reconsider its demand", which applies to all non-English teams.
Owner Bernard Guasch said they want to defend the cup, but added "it would be irresponsible to accept" the decision.
"The players would be very frustrated not being able to defend their title and we hope that we'll have an answer as soon as possible," Guasch said.
The deposit is understood to have been introduced to help cover any dip in revenue raised from the RFL's flagship competition.
While Catalans made history by winning in 2018, the final against Warrington was played in front of 50,672 - Wembley Stadium's lowest Challenge Cup final crowd since World War Two.
Already, fellow French club Toulouse and Canadian side Toronto - the first team from across the Atlantic to play in the Challenge Cup - have decided not to enter the competition. Both teams play in England's second division.
Red Star Belgrade, however, will remain in the competition and not need to pay the bond as they are an amateur team that will play their opening two rounds away from home, should they progress.
The RFL confirmed issues about Catalans' cup defence were raised in December.
"We have been surprised and disappointed by the uncertainty over the Catalans Dragons participation in the 2019 Challenge Cup, which surfaced just before Christmas," a statement said.
"We have been in discussions with the club since then, and will continue those discussions to search for a solution."
Analysis
Matt Newsum, BBC Sport rugby league reporter
The prospect of the Challenge Cup holders refusing to defend their title, because of issues related to bonds and financial input, is one which has left most rugby league fans scratching their heads.
Catalans' success at Wembley last year was one of the highlights of any season, let alone 2018, a genuine moment of brightness and progress in a sport which needs as many newsworthy crossover moments as it can muster.
However, amid the excitement there were concerns at the level of the attendance at that showpiece event, one of the knock-on effects of fewer Catalans fans making the trip.
It is not the only factor though. One of the issues comes from the RFL acquiring the opportunity to sell the ring of 'Club Wembley' seats that previously were counted as part of the attendance. The slide was felt in 2017 too.
With a number of big events in London over the August Bank Holiday weekend such as the Notting Hill Carnival and Premier League football - travel and accommodation prices are ramped up. Also the impact of track maintenance work massively affecting the West Coast Mainline must be acknowledged. Expense and inconvenience for fans has to be considered. It did dissuade fans from travelling.
Changes have been made to the date of the final going forward in order to arrest this issue, moving to July to avoid such clashes and cost implications.
There is some sympathy at the RFL seeking to cover its back financially, but there is mostly the sense that this was a massive 'own goal' for the governing body.
The question ought to be asked: If Wembley proves too expensive for the Challenge Cup, then perhaps it needs to rethink where the final is held?

Spot on.

wrencat1873 wrote:
Another classic own goal by the sport, it wouldn't be a surprise if Toronto or Catalan sued The RFL for effectively precluding them from one of the oldest cup competition in the game and they ought to win.

We seem happy to take the "benefits" of having overseas clubs in "our" competition but we dont want any of the risk.

The situation would be equally difficult if two Championship clubs appeared in the Cup Final, therefore, perhaps they should all have to pay the levy as well ? (I'm not serious about them paying but, this demonstrates just how discriminatory the sport is being towards certain clubs).

Surely the answer is to have the semi finals and final far enough apart to allow the game to market one of only two major finals and get wembley sold out.

If not, we mat as well stage the game in a venue to match the "demand", maybe Doncaster or Leigh

This is wrong and humiliating

That statement itself surely opens up leverage for Catalans , Toulouse & Toronto .

Last time I attended was the re-opening of Wembley when Catalan played Saints , we traveled down on a trip organised from Wigan , plenty of Pie fans on the coach had booked before the semi defeat to the Dragons , they went down to London but didn't go to the match

I'm hanging on to this game by a thread and I don't know why any more, if its not Box and his antics with the council its the RFL and their stupid idiot calls to change the game I despair, it needs a walk out of the clubs to make them listen

It may well be that it's the clubs that they're listening to. A bit reminiscent of moves to reduce TV monies to the lower leagues. Why not hit Catalans too?

Whilst I have never been a fan of non-British teams playing in our competitions, I believe that you have to treat them fairly, once you have invited them to participate. This will just be an additional reason to make our sport a laughing stock, in the eyes of others. I have friends (honestly! ) who support Premiership football teams, and who just can't wait for the next episode in the farce that is RL. Whilst they may admire the players, they see our governing body as the comedy gift that continues to give!

Re: Catalans Challenge Cup : Fri Jan 04, 2019 8:13 pm
While I prefer to grow the game organically & not give every overseas club a leg up towards or to remain in Super Dooper League this smacks of discrimination !

I have nothing against TW, TO13 or Les Cats per se, I do stand with them on their stance to refuse to be part of this sham.

If RL can a) no longer fill New Wembley or b) afford New Wembley then why not move to a new venue ? New Wembley is not iconic like Wembley was nor does it have the history or are attachment it once had so why not play the moving card ? If the RFL want to keep the CC London based then go to Spurs or Arsenal & broker a deal better than New Wembley ! Surely a full & smaller alternative venue is both easier to attain & more attractive to audiences & sponsors than what we had last year ???

Move & sell it out with better marketing & RL & the CC looks more like a hot ticket than the fire sale desperation of recent times.

I will also add to my previous post that the NFL move the Super Bowl regularly, one modern large capacity stadium is much like any other.
