The never played at it rule : Sun Sep 06, 2009 1:01 pm
This has bugged me for some time as I think there's an anomaly with it.
My point - If a kicker boots upfield and it ricochets off an opponent, the ball is up for grabs. If it can be reclaimed by the kicker or a team-mate, the tackle count continues.
But, as in Friday's match at Headingley, a player tries to offload in-field and the ball inadvertantly bounces off an opponent into touch, possession is given to the defending side in a scrum.
I feel that if this happens (and the same with a kick), then the side in possession should have a play-the-ball next to the touchline, letting the tackle count continue.
The rule is sure to allow more attacking opportunites which the sport strives for on every level.
