I know it shows that I judged him purely on his look as a rugby player but it genuinely surprised me how knowledgeable and thoughtful he is.
I was really impressed.

For me, there are two types of 'great' sportsmen.

Those who are born with a god-given gift, George Best, Gazza, even Danny Brough.

Then there are those who make themselves great, by hard work and the ability to learn and to recover from adversity.

Both are valid, both are great to watch, both are vital to any sport. However, it's usually the self-made player who's more rounded and intelligent and thus a more interesting person IMO. Not always the case, you do get interesting level headed naturals but you virtually never get a stupid, self-destructive, self-absorbed, monosyllabic self-made player. The sort who usually makes it as well outside the game as in.

That's my long-winded way of saying I'm not surprised he was interesting, he will be as nothing came easy.

Yes! I agree..... that was long winded (for some reason I can’t attach a winking emoji... so you’ll have to imagine one )

Interesting. Nice to hear about the old stars. Some great names time go at in Trinity distant past.
Did not know Jonty was so well regarded at international level.

I assume no one on here saw him play as you'd have to be well into your 90s but anyone know him after he stopped playing? Sounds like he was well known around the area.

I think both ( or two of??) his sons remained in and around Wakefield... one ran a fairly sizeable business in cold storage and refrigerated transport and the other was a vet

Just listened to the podcast and didn’t realise the refrigeration business was started by Jonty ... I know the business after his death was run by Neal.

just finished the JD podcast on my walk to work and just listening to his pride and passion he had not just for our club but the game as a whole is overwhelming. Coming over here without a club into the unknown and ending up a legend . Then down to earth with a bump watching Pauli lumbering around for York last night . You couldn’t get two overseas players at the opposite ends of the scales for me , one came over with big wraps and bombed spectacularly , the other came over more in hope , and left a hero . Just goes to show if your willing to put the effort in you really can achieve your dreams .

Don't think PP did bomb completely, his first season was pretty good then slowly he seemed to lose his way. Simply didn't have the heart.
