Throughly frustrating refereeing display. Lacked consistency and conviction for me which led to a frustrating afternoon for all

Re: The worst ref display ever? : Sun Jun 24, 2012 5:20 pm
I've seen pens given for being offside at the kick off before now. The easiest way to avoid seeing them given? Don't be offside at the kick off, it's not rocket science.
He was inconsistent with his decisions, but then most refs are. All of the penalties he blew for were penalties, the simple answer is that we saw two teams with poor discipline today. The two big calls, which could have gone either way, were split 50/50. When Bateman lost the ball he could have called it as a knock-on, but gave us a vital pen that gave us a 2 point cushion. Then when BK had his run and the ball came free, again he could either have said play on or penalise wakey. You see those calls being made every game.

The only thing I would pull the ref up for is when Southern was injured and he didn't stop play. We had posession and Steve was crocked right in the middle of their defensive line. It was dangerous to allow play to contine, in fact Burgess almost ran right over the top of Steve and the physio. In the end up we actually went on to score from that play, so Wakefield have every right to feel aggreived imo.

Why was a penalty given for driving the tackled Wakey player back over their try line? Is good defence penalised these days?

The tackle is over as soon as Wakey players lend their force to the ruck. Again sometimes those situations are allowed to stand, others not. Hicks will have been calling held, the players probably didn't hear him, or just didn't care.

Right. You see those game in game out. I didn't hear him call held from where I was.

Worst refereeing display I've seen all season (including the 40 odd games of junior rugby I've watched) ruined what could have been a very good and entertaining game with to very evenly matched sides. The southern incident was the worst one and I'm sure he will be made aware of this

Worth the trip over though enjoyed the banter and for once it didn't rain when I went to Odsal :thumb:

Re: The worst ref display ever? : Sun Jun 24, 2012 6:21 pm
As a player I hoped that the referee would know the Rules and be fit enough to be in a position to apply them.
I expected that each Ref had his own subjective interpretation of the the Rules, such as what's 10 metres, high tackles, forward passes for example. despite these being specifically explained in the Rules.
The very least I would have expected from a referee, good bad or indifferent was consistency of decision.
Mr Hicks failed today in this respect to the detriment of both sides.
