It's not how much talent you've got, it's what you do with it that counts.

I don't see how we can justify someone's continuing employment based on "surely has something to offer a team". He's failed, failed to get the current set of players to an acceptable standard. That's it for me, it's what he was employed for so he has to go. Poor workman etc.

Well let’s see how he gets on with Smith….

Easy to single out Long but for me he’s too experienced and achieved too much in the game to assume its his fault. The players here working with aren’t good enough not good enough to lace his boots. Surely has something to offer a team?

Can't agree with you on this Shabs. What he's achieved in the game means nothing now. As a player he was at the top, but this is a different career and I fail to see what he's done as a coach to make him not culpable.

The attack is as bad as it's been. You can blame the quality of players, but this is Super League, not the NRL. A well drilled team can be greater than the sum of it's parts. How often do they look like they've spent a week going through moves or a gameplan? And if you're talking about experience, there's enough in this team to be vastly better than they are.

Remember the A-Team when they'd make a tank out of a barrel and some old rope? You'd watch that and think 'genius' because they used what was available to achieve something. Long 'The Attack Genius' hasn't been able to coach a group of professional rugby players to pass accurately, hit lines, isolate defends, mount pressure on an oponents line or even score tries. He'd be Long gone if it was up to me

Well maybe he will go at the end of the season. I just think having him around would motivate better players. I’d constantly be tapping into his knowledge base as a half. The issue has been that none of our halves have his vision , guile, or most importantly speed……then you add no consistent pairings and dummy half supply…..

Having said that, if the consensus is that he should go, I’d completely understand and support that….

Long was very good at times but discipline and structure weren't his strengths so much as speed and instinct. You can't coach that into players. Structure you can. I'd pay a motza to get Johns over for a week in the off-season. He not only reads every play superbly but can communicate it too. Spots things nobody else does.

Perhaps Sean Long could be replaced as assistant coach with Danny McGuire returning for 2023?

A good player doesn’t always make a good coach, especially with halves it seems and even more so with those who were very naturally talented.

I’d like to think that much like the playing squad, the off-field stuff is under review for next year with smith being here for the long haul.

Likewise truely good players don’t need much coaching!

But is there any evidence that McGuire is a good coach? Sentimental loyalty to the Golden Generation needs to end, its really an albatross at the club. If he proves himself as a coach (i.e. not behind someone else like Tony Smith) then sure. Until then avoid like the plague.
