"Look, I'd never use injuries as an excuse..." Daryl Powell

Re: Exit Long : Wed May 18, 2022 4:08 am
Yeah, I get the sentiment of a non-golden approach. At the same time, appointing Long was stepping away from that and he's been every bit as bad as those of a purer pedigree. I'd be tempted to cast any eye over McGuire, if only because those who've coached under Tony Smith seem to transition into useful coaches themselves. McGuire might be that one golden we oughtn't to pass up on.

Talking of sentiment for the goldens, if I was Smith I'd have that hall of history walking out to the pitch covered up for now and tell the players you make your own history. I genuinely think it's not helpful at all, all this brooding on the past.

If the players aren’t mentally tough enough to walk past a hall of fame showing some of the great players the club has had id suggest they aren’t mentally tough enough to become one of those players.

If that’s the case then why have coaches at all?

The players you are maybe referring to are those true once in a lifetime types, who are almost like coaches themselves within the team. It is impossible to rely on them indefinitely at the expense of coaching, and they certainly don’t start their careers like that.

On the flip side, everyone can improve with good coaching both as individuals and a team. I’d say Leeds atm, the Bulldogs in the NRL (who signed some very good players this year but haven’t changed anything) and even the like of Man Utd in the premier league are examples of teams that aren’t performing to the sum of their parts. From a Leeds perspective I don’t think we’re top of the table quality, but we also shouldn’t be relegation candidates like we currently look. That’s down to coaching and motivation, which is a coaches job.

Id say that it's rammed in their faces and down their earholes at every turn and the whole thing is more significant than you think. It's not even about being mentally tough enough, I'm not saying theyre metally crumbling when they see it, but the focus should be on the present.

How do you know it’s been rammed down their faces, lots of clubs do similar things.

The issue isn’t some pictures on a wall.

Because it's all we hear in the media releases too, whether it's JJB in his press conferences and changing room speeches or peacock, and the talk of leeds DNA and the jobs for the boys from that generation. It's everywhere, I'm sure I'm not the only fan thats bored of it, maybe they should ask the players.

Again you're trivialising my point with your last sentence, that's just the tip of it. Of course this is just my opinion but I think it would make a strong binding statement to consciously shelve this harking back to history. Certainly better than burning some sht and making a rhinos head out of it.

JJB constantly said in his pressers they needed to form their own path and identity.

I am trivialising it because IMO it is trivial.

Yet he speaks and acts contrary to that. That's fine, we're OK to disagree.

When a player joins Leeds, they do so knowing the history of the club, the great players to have worn the shirt and the success that has been achieved. I'm sure that it's something that entices youngsters and seasoned pros to try create their own legacy.

I agree that constantly banging the drum about all they achieved isn't necessarily required, but there should be the link there to the past.

It should be used to motivate players not burden them with the guilt of not reaching the heights. After all, how many times have people complained that players don't appreciate the shirt they wear?
