With Newman's injury, this makes sence, and he was pretty decent at centre towards the back end of the season, and has a good partnership with Handley.

You do need some high quality squad players but I’m not overjoyed with this.
If it is a couple more years to take him to testimonial, maybe. We do need some experienced cover at centre, or FB in emergencies maybe.
Nothing against him but when’s the last time he MoM’d? Wouldn’t be in my first 17 but we’re unlikely to have a fully fit squad so...
I'm not overjoyed either but neither am totaly unhappy about it also. He doesn't make my 17 when all fit but he does cover both backs and back row. I can see him taking Donaldson spot on the bench.

I think, the problem I have with it, is the worry that we might see both Donaldson and Sutty on the bench. Neither would make my full strength team, but Agar (who is in full possession of the facts) often feels I'm wrong.
He showed a lot of promise early in his career, but has never really gone up another level since becoming a regular. Granted, it hasn't helped with the predicament of the team fighting against relegation seemingly every other season, and being moved between a variety of different positions.
He's either a poor half-back, a solid second-rower, or a slow direct-running centre with the occasional decent pass in him. Good for utility value, and good for squad depth, but he needs to fight his way into the first choice 17.
Would he have a new contract if Newman didn't get injured last season?

I think he would have been offered a new contract as the coaching staff see his versatility as a plus.I just hope him and Donaldson do not hamper Walters chances of a 17 spot.

I actually thought the move to Cas would make sense for all parties, but here we are.
He is a good player. Not back row for me, he annoys me there he has nowhere near the mentality of a forward IMHO. Centre is his best and he is OK there.
Not really in the bracket of Innes, Iro, Blackmore, Godden, Senior, Walker, Watkins... or even Ablett for me but certainly not rubbish either.
