Before the knives come out in one way or another, I feel it is only appropriate to stand back and applaud what has been an excellent international career from one of the the toughest, most resilient players of his generation.

He's shown some integrity in not trying to hang around to the world cup next year, and helps McNamara transition to a new captain. Peacock himself has always been solid for GB/England.

Brilliant player,fantastic career and hugely respected by everyone.

Brave call this as well but absolutely the right decision by JP.

He's been a great captain but now is the right time to step down. I get the feeling the Exiles game was a step too far.

Nah, if your outgoing Captain makes a statement like "It's time for a younger generation " it would be daft coach who then missed an opportunity to choose a young player.

And in all honesty, Tompkins might just benefit from it. And if Union does come knocking then it's another thing to keep him.

Tomkins has shown nothing to suggest he could be a captain, and it might detract from his overall game. The only positive is that it would stop referees penalizing him for chelping at them, but if that's a reason then we'd be better off giving to James Graham, who also seems to have some leadership qualities.
