Re: Team of the Millenium : Sat Aug 30, 2014 7:39 pm
Buderus was a better player than Diskin.

Diskin did far more for Leeds than Buderus did.

Therefore Diskin for me.

In much the same way as I would pick Sinfield in a best Leeds team of my lifetime ahead of Hanley, despite Hanley being the best British player I've ever seen. Hanley's best years were elsewhere, and his achievements at Leeds are dwarfed by Sinfield's.

Likewise, as much as I rated Buderus, Diskin won 4 Grand Finals with Leeds (scoring our first try in two of them) and won a Harry Sunderland trophy and was player of the season in probably our best season of this era.

Every player in our squad could probably earn more money with another club. But they prefer to sacrifice a few extra quid in their back pocket to share special memories. And playing at a place like Old Trafford on a night like this makes it all worthwhile.

Kevin Sinfield

That's excellent logic and the Sinfield/Hanley comparison is a perfect illustration.

Get you clever clogs.

Surprised no one has opted for Brett Mullins, Joe Vickery, Ben Cross, Chris Feather, Mark O'Neill, David Barnhill, Ben Walker and Nathan McAvoy......nailed on surely?

Peacock wishes he was half the player Ben Cross was :)

I'd agree with the logic, but we all have our favourites, for example I'd be tempted to put ET in my "team of a lifetime" even though the logic would suggest Brent Webb.

Would you have Cliff Lyons in yours? Superb for Leeds, but over two short seasons and the best part of his career elsewhere, just as with Hanley and Buderus. All other criteria would suggest Danny McGuire is guaranteed a place miles ahead of him.

That is purely objective recollection. Yeah he wasn't quite as "sexy" or exotic as the Aussie captain but I can't help that other fans look at Antipodeans with googly eyes.

........no different to our esteemed coach then - with his repeated selection of Joe Vickery :D

You just need a slight correction to your formula.

Buderus LEEDS peak vs Diskin Leeds peak = Diskin win

I'm not judging it on anything Buderus did in his career elsewhere, solely his Leeds career.

People quickly forget how good Diskin was in that 2004 season, far better than Buderus was in his excellent 2010 season. Diskin was Leeds player of the year in a steamroller team that won the LLS and the GF. He went on to win the Harry Sunderland and gain deserved international recognition.

That is purely objective recollection. Yeah he wasn't quite as "sexy" or exotic as the Aussie captain but I can't help that other fans look at Antipodeans with googly eyes.

That's exactly what I said

If we extended this debate 'team of the SL era' would many other players get a look in apart from Harris and Morley? I can think of a few honourable mentions but i would say no.

Leeds Rhinos? 8 for you, Leeds Rhinos! You go, Leeds Rhinos.

And none for Castleford Tigers. Bye!

Re: Team of the Millenium : Sun Aug 31, 2014 11:38 am
Brad Godden might get a look in. He was a superbly skillful centre, and any winger playing outside him looked good. *cough*Cummins*cough*

And in the pack, Mark Glanville was a great pack leader in Murray's brutal team.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been more mention of Dave Furner, one of the best back rowers we have seen at Leeds, certainly in this Millennium. If we are going back to the days of ET like some have suggested you can't fail to mention Eric Grothe, completely under utilised by the coach of the day but one of the best wingers ever to put on a Leeds shirt. I know this will spark debate over some older wingers eg. Alan Smith but still Grothe by a mile for me
