As you well know Mr Chapeltown my support for the Rhinos is hardwired and possibly even genetic! My support for the Gunners is more 'cerebral' and driven by my kids and the fact that I have lived near (both) stadia for the last 25 years! :D

Newcastle could quite easily pay £30m for a player if Ashley could see a return on the investment just because he chooses not to doesn't mean he can't

Interesting viewpoint which im not sure is correct. Ashley & Pardew look to the younger end of the market and usually from abroad as they know they can make a return however this could be changing as the youth set up at Newcastle is churning out some great talent at the min who are knocking on that first team door very quickly.

Ashley may be a 'chav millionaire' but his business model at St James isn't as crazy as it seems

Your job is to say to yourself on a job interview does the hiring manager likes me or not. If you aren't a particular manager's cup of tea, you haven't failed -- you've dodged a bullet.

Ashley is a very shrewd businessman - if he thought investing £30m in a player would get them into the champions league he would do it. All he sees is investing £30m moves them from 12th to 10th so what is the point.

Why do you think he is interested in Rangers - its his easiest route into the Champions League.

The point is Mike Ashley could easily afford to spend £30m on a player the fact he won't doesn't mean he can't

I think he believes he can turn Rangers into a huge profit making venture, it has the fan base although the market they compete in is stagnant beyond belief (Scotish football)

A friend is a season ticket holder at St James and he reckons all it would take is a nice amount with a few 0s on would see Ashley sell Newcastle in a second

I'm not surprised. He has done a lot for them, and though Newcastle fans consider themselves to be the most passionate about the game, they are also the most fickle I think

Ashley would almost definitely be able to fund a 30m purchase, NUFC would be able to stretch themselves to a 30m player if they thought he was worth it. Newcastle's problem is that virtually no 30m player would go to them.

I think Ashley is after Rangers because they are at present a basket case that is struggling but there is still the infrastructure and fan base to give someone huge profits if they sort out the problems. While the CL will be a strong incentive for Rangers, he'd actually get a better return by getting Newcastle to the CL because TV rights are better, they have a bigger ground and I'd assume the ticket prices are much higher. The problem at Newcastle is that the competition is too intense in the PL and they'd have to spend 10s of millions and still probably end up missing out.

Ashley's whole business model is to go after distressed brands and make the most out of them he can. He's after Rangers for the shirts not the Champions League, and tying up 50% of the Scottish market to his shops. The problem is that he'll alienate the other 50%.

Its both - the champions league gives the club more exposure which in turn sells more merchandise.

Not a man to be underestimated Ashley - if more clubs were run like he runs Newcastle the game would be in a better place

Swansea spent 28m on a player, can't believe Swansea is anymore attractive than Newcastle!!
