As others have said he has all the tools but lacks the fundamentals but thankfully those can be coached.
His read in defence for the first try was woeful, and with open ground in front of him he seemed reluctant to make the most of it. It would be interesting to see how he went in the pack but he is doing a job on the wing long term though I think he needs to be at centre.
Many Wigan fans love nothing better than piling in with unjustified/over harsh criticism of certain players. We should perservere with Gelling, he's raw but raw in the sense that an uncut diamond is raw. It's up to Gelling and Wigan to shape this lad into the star he has the potential to become - he seems keen to play for the club so we should give him a chance.
He's still raw and some of the things he gets criticised for should be sorted out with experience, however the thing I have a problem with in regards to Gelling is his finishing. He runs it hard, straight and aggressive when taking the ball in to give the forwards a rest, which is why his metre stats are generally one of the best in most games, but give him open space or the try line at his mercy and his doesn't back himself in the same way.
Agreed. He's a hard worker, with a good attitude, which is presumably why Waney is sticking with him, but his main problems are a lack of pace, poor handling and often poor judgment. Those can be learned/coached, and I agree he's got bags of potential, my view is that he should be learning those skills elsewhere, at present.
He's had a dozen games now, yet Thornley, on debut, (and also out of position, don't forget!) was at least as good, if not better than him.
it would have been a two on one regardless of what happened, similar to charnley on many occassions last year.
He shot out of the line for no reason. I was stood within earshot Carmont had a quiet word, Finch was a bit more vocal, gave him the rounds of the kitchen.
Great build for a super league player. I think he's been brought upto the first team too early. I will admit that I don't get to watch all the Wigan games but the ones I have seen, he has made the simpliest try scoring chances look very difficult. Also has terrible ball security. Time to learn though and I think under Wane he will only get better.

When Richards is back I think that may be all we see of Gelling for 2012 and that's probably fair enough. He's done a good job IMO but probably has played a lot more games then Wane would have liked due to injuries.
I think they'll get him back playing with the u20's and put loads of work in to him on the training field ready for next year. They'll have that bit more freedom to try him in a few positions at u20 level and that will help.
With a good and full pre season under his belt I think he could be a cracker for us in 2013.

aboveusonlypie... If you don't bother to go to the game when you live in the locality then you are not really a fan and therefore your views are invalid. It's simple.

I think this is the point many are missing...He was not due to play, and has stood in for Pat and done a very effective DEFENSIVE job, allowing others to flourish.
Before you get on my case about how it would have been better to use someone else, look at the table!!
