Obstruction : Mon Sep 29, 2014 4:31 pm
On Friday, Jodie Broughton's 90-metre effort was ruled a no-try because of obstruction 10 metres from our line. Fair enough, even though it was almost certainly accidental, but it seems to me that to then lose two points from the resultant penalty was very harsh.

My feeling is that obstruction in the opponents' half should probably remain a penalty, but obstruction in your own half preventing a tackle on one of your players who already has control of the ball should only concede a scrum - it should be no harder to manage than a 40-20 kick.

The ironic thing is even though it was given as obstruction 3 or 4 of their players failed to tackle Jodie even though they were more or less level with him. If he was tackled would it still have been a penalty ? nope it would have been 1st tackle to us. How can a try be disallowed for obstruction when at least 3 players had the chance to make a tackle on him but didn't, so in effect we got penalised cos they failed to stop Jodie's run and then the ref had the chance to go back, if he had seen obstruction why didn't he blow straight away ?

Somewhere in the dust of time rest the bones of the Galilean
He who was spat upon. He whose face was marred beyond all human likeness
Somewhere buried among the lies of the past rests the tomb of Yeshua
Of he who was made God in a world without Hope.
And when this son of Joseph is found. What then will the Church of Rome say?
Prepare yourself for the day is coming. And men will say
"Blessed are the wasted lives who perished in the flames of the holy war"

That's was my thought afterwards. In future may I suggest if players go on breakaways like that in televised games they slow up and let themselves be caught just in case there was some obstruction, that way at least we get 5 tackles in the opponents half.

It's part of what makes the VR a mess. They should be limited to checking the in goal area only the rest of the pitch should be the refs and TJ's respomsibility. If a referee can make a call in a non-televised game he can make the same call in a televised one.

think the kopczak 'try' was a close call, bailey judged to have knocked on but we know he likes to pass the ball out in the tackle.. crucial call that one by childs

Re: Obstruction : Tue Sep 30, 2014 11:58 am
a few silly plays when we had the game in the bag, trying to score off every play with brough firing out a pass to patricks head! (was that a knock on?)

then patrick missing tackles for catalans to get up field and a kopczak penalty  then what we all know about broughton being poor in the air and not getting to the high bomb which they got they try from.

think that last try had all our seasons failings in one! deserved nothing, didnt learn and it was too late

i have given up on this whole obstruction thing,it's just plain daft now.
half the time no one has actually been 'obstructed' yet it's still given as a penalty or 'no try'

I agree Meast but it's not just the obstruction rules the whole game has gone crazy.I have stated before that the interfering with the rules of the game is causing a great deal of loyal spectators to leave the game.I have always held the game of rugby league in the highest regard for its honesty and integrity which is being threatened by a panel of boneheads systematically destroying the greatest game in the world.I have after great deliberation renewed my season ticket hoping that Redhall will maybe see sense and stop buggering about with 'OUR GAME'.
One other point. When are they going to sort out those clowns on the disciplinary panel? It's gone way past a joke.
To complete my rant how many overseas players have Catalan on their books? in my view they are a team of other nationalities and if all sides are equal why are they allowed to sign players that have been banned by the RL?

How do you tell a communist? Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin.

Assuming you are referring to the cross field kick from which they scored their final try...

This is a tactic which I feel we ought to employ more. Assuming a decent challenge, these cross field kicks to the line always favour the attacking team. The defender really needs to catch the ball whereas the attacker, already advantaged as he should have a running start on the defender, can try catch it or simply look to palm it to a teammate. If I was attacking I would look to place an arm between the defender's up-reaching arms so he is unable to catch it cleanly and look to palm it backwards if not catch it myself. I would like to see Leory given such opportunities to challenge in this situation next season.

Catalans had 3 on 2 (Oldfield, Pomeroy, Whitehead - all well over 6 feet - versus Broughton and Brough - 5 feet 8 on his tiptoes) where they scored their final try, and Oldfield had both 2 inches height and the advantage of a run up on Broughton. Coupled with the quality of the kick, Broughton was always second favourite there and maybe we shouldn't be too critical of him for that piece of defending, but if criticise we must, let us at least acknowledge his outstanding try-saving tackle on Oldfield in the first minute of the game when he looked certain to score.
