Miners 14 v 25 Wath Brow
Leigh Miners suffered there first home league defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon when they went down 25-14 against a very good Wath Brow Hornets side on a warm day at Twist Lane. It was the visitors who started the brighter and where in control of the game for the opening twenty minutes with them having plenty of possession and field position in that period. Brow opened the scoring after seven minutes when hooker Mark Watson cleverly stripped the ball from a miners attacker to go in and score, the try being awarded has a penalty try after Watson was hit late after scoring the try, Fran King converting both attempts at goal to make it 8-0. Miners hit back just after the twenty minute mark in what was their first real attack, centre Adam Thomason barging over to score in his first game back from a four month injury layoff to make it 8-4. Wath Brow hit back a few minutes later when scrum half Greg Howland went over to score, the visitors where in again just before half time when full back Jamie Devine capitalized on a mix up between the miners defenders following a chip over the top, Devine picking up the loose ball to race into score, Fran King slotting over his fourth conversion of the afternoon to give Wath Brow a well deserved 20-4 half time advantage.
Miners got on the scoreboard early in the second half when Adam Thomason went over for his second of the game out wide on the right to make it 20-8. Fran King made sure Miners would need more than two converted tries to beat them when he banged over a drop goal on fifty minutes to make it 21-8. Miners got one of them tries just after the hour when full back Jonny Youds got on the end of a Scott O'Brien chip kick to score at the side of the posts, Youds converting his own try to make it 21-14. That score was has good as it got for the home side with their attack being nowhere near good enough on the day to trouble a side like Wath Brow, The Hornets wrapped up the points late on when Karl Dixon went over out wide to give the final score 25-14.
Miners are at home again next week against Wigan St Judes.
