Phil Clarke : Thu Sep 18, 2014 6:45 am
Interesting post by Phil Clarke on his page on the Sky Sports website. Couldn't be a guy more Cherry and White and understandably so but he questions Wigan's lying on tactics from last weeks games and suggests that it is boring. Now I know we and 12 other Forums have said this all year but Hallelujah. The only way it will get addressed is if it gets into the public spotlight because the fans never get asked.

You can always expect to see a thread about Phil Clarke on this forum! I do agree with his point about the play the balls being slowed down more this season. All teams are doing it as it is an essential part of the game to gain as much advantage as possible in that area. It has frustrated me all season. The referees do seem to have become more tolerant which is slowing the game down. It is not surprising though that all supporters think that it is only the opposition that is lying on as long as possible!

Re: Phil Clarke : Thu Sep 18, 2014 8:57 am
At the risk of being pilloried, I actually think Phil Clarke is a very fair, honest and knowledgeable pundit, and he was a very fine player as well. Yes, he sometimeslapses into Wigan-fan mode but so what? If it was me I'd be sat there every week in my end-of-an-era WIlderspool jersey and scarf.

He also has, and has readily expressed, a lot of time for Warrington and admiration for the way we play the game so I'm not suprised to see he is as dismayed about this as other fans. He is an RL first and foremost.

In terms of the tactics, it's good to see someone highlighting it because it is becoming a blight on the game. However, in terms of sorting it the bloke who can actually do something about it is sat watching it like us every week and doing precisely nothing. I can only assume he thinks it's a legitimate tactic or he is vastly more Wigan-biased than Clarkey.

I was saying this to someone the other day, how is Cummings not all over this he is the one sat there every week watching 2-3 games and must get as annoyed as the rest of us trying to watch a fast flowing game of RL, instead we are being offered messy ptb's and a slower game for it!

Re: Phil Clarke : Thu Sep 18, 2014 9:10 am
'The match between the Warriors and the Wolves was a dramatic contest to watch, but one thing struck me as I observed from the sidelines: at times it was taking five or six seconds for a tackle to be completed. It became a slow and unattractive wrestling match between the ball carrier and four or five defenders who were wrestling him to the floor, especially when Warrington had the ball.

The town of Wigan has a world-wide reputation for wresting, and local legends like Roy Wood do a brilliant job of promoting the sport to young people, but I’m not a big believer that it looks good during a game of rugby. Instead of tackling, it’s becoming popular for the first defender to ‘catch’ the ball carrier, grabbing hold of him and waiting for the rest of the wrestling team to arrive. I realise that it’s not illegal, and I probably need to accept that it’s just going to grow in popularity across more teams, but I see it being an issue over the next few seasons. The speed of the match is something that the game’s administrators need to monitor as it is the greatest attraction of the sport to many people, and if the ruck becomes too slow then the game will become a bore. But the big question is how can it be fixed?'

The above is what Clarke said and it is hard to disagree with any of it, I just hope he brings it up during live coverage too as Eddie and Stevo will then be in Cummings ear about it!

Well i have to admit i have never been a big fan of his work as a pundit due to his wigan bias but take it all back with these public words.
Honest assessment of last weeks game which i have to admit i am still fuming about

Re: Phil Clarke : Thu Sep 18, 2014 11:37 am
I honestly think the pie fans think all the rest of us have this blinkered overreaction to all things pie-ish. But we really don't. If Wakefield or Hull KR adopted their tactics week-after-week the refs just wouldn't let them get away with it like they do Wigan. This isn't just anti-Wigan views neither as i thought McClennan's Leeds side were the same (McDermott and Smith's Leeds were not like that).

The way they play makes games boring and annoying. They slow games down so much it's finally even starting to get on Super Pie Clarke's nerves. They make you feel like dozing off!

Two men into a tackle, they hold the man up and the third man waits at the side for the ref to shout held, as he shouts held the third man jumps in to complete an already-called-held tackle and the three tacklers takes the man to the floor. All three of them then either try and turn the man on his back or simply lie on top of the player, while they wait for the ref to shout move (even though he's already called held!). When he calls move one by one they peel off the man on the floor, sometimes with the one(s) remaining with hands on the ball or trying to pull the other arm away from the floor. This can take 12 seconds, all-in, from first contact to the ball being played; it's supposed to take 4.

It's nothing but tedious!

The refs just let them do it though and it gets worse come play-off time because the refs seem to think it acceptable to revert to Aussie State of Origin level of reffing the PTB - they just let anything go.

This season?

It has been going on at Wigan since Maguire joined them and was going on at Leeds during McClennan's tenure.

I know none of you will like or accept this but you lot held down just as much as Wigan did last week. Clarke is just a fan pleaser or try to be.
