The loose forward can be whatever role you want them to be.
It'll depend on the make-up of the rest of your team. If you're light up front you can put a prop eg Bailey there. If you need some pace you put a quick second rower there eg JJB. If you need some creativity/structure/whatever you put that kind of player there.
The seeming demise of the ball playing loose forward has been more to do with the rise of the fullback being used as a pivot or creative player rather than just defensive or support player, in my opinion.

That's about it. Teams either use that extra "middle" player, or often though double up on the left side (because everyone passes better to that side) effectively having an extra centre/second row there.

i'm sure more games will do jjb good but he certainly did not look off the pace against Salford quite the opposite in fact

JJB still looks a little off the pace to me at the moment. Hopefully more matches will fix that.

For many people JJB was MOM in our last match and considering his lack of minutes since injury he looked quite sharp IMO

For the semi final I would play Sinfield at 6 and with Burrow and Mags in the halves. So Aiton to start with Sutcliffe on the bench to allow Burrow to switch to 9 as and when needed. I would start Delaney at prop so that JJB and Ablett would be in the 2nd row. My bench would be Sutcliffe, Walters, Kylie, and 4th prop from Kirke, Bailey and Singleton based on how they perform against Bradford. This would keep our key playmakers on the field for the maximum time to exploit all our attacking chances with a bench that could provide a mix of impact and experience.

Fittler, Hill, Jason Smith - all played a bit at loose forward when they slowed down. Greg Bird doesn't play as a ball-handler at all and hasn't for years. when they switch to loose forward they generally stop being ball handlers in the way they were at 6.

Whenever I've seen Bird recently he's been in the 2nd row.
