Of course this is not "the best Leeds team ever".....the point I was trying to make was that despite the recent lengthy run of poor form/poor outcomes the team still resided at the top of the league at the time of my OP been posted....IMO a reflection of the declining standards in SL. There is a paucity of good stern intensive matches that allows this team to get away with lacklustre performances and still remain in contention at the time of writing for all 3 trophies up for grabs.
From a personal perspective - at least for this season - that fact is selfishly good, because I would love to see these ageing core players win the elusive CC winners medals they richly deserve (apart from Kirke of course
).
Superficially there is nothing to complain about. However, how many matches have there been that have truly been a 'contest' of the highest calibre this season? Every season these matches at least
seem to become fewer and fewer (am I wrong? Maybe my ageing brain deceives me
)
The highlights for me this season have been the form of Zak Hardaker and the glimpses of the talented Watkins. Hall and Moon continue to impress; Burrow is as exciting as ever and not maybe fully appreciated in this team and its lack of structure until more largely exposed when he does not play - the team relies on his ability to break defences to a very large degree.
Ablett is on course for being my Leeds player of the year; maybe just shading Hardaker because of his damaging faux pas resulting in missing 5 matches.
Walters too looks highly promising; more so than Stevie Ward and Sutcliffe IMHO. Time will tell.
