Yeah, sack the players so that they have to pay out their contracts and lose out on transfer fees probably well over 200 million quid.

And those players have proved themselves as pretty awful. I mean, they only won the league twice in the last three years, and finished level on points when they finished second. Complete and utter donkeys. It's clearly their fault that the managerial genius of David Moyes lost his job.

Will Man Utd pay up all his contract?....that's one hell of a pension fund.

6 year deal....what were they thinking?

As for the players...well they will be in for a shock if Van Gaal gets the job...makes Fergie look like a diplomat.

He will tell it like it is...even to the media.

There'll be some sort of break clause in the contract. One reporter has claimed that they can limit the pay out to one year's salary because they cant qualify for the CL.

Mourinho looked sick as a pig yesterday.

The way United's season has turned out, I guess it's not suprising.

Though It's suprising in the sense you expected United to stick by their supposed principles and give him time. I expected a summer of transfers and then another crack next year, then if things were going tits up I expected they would pull the plug.

The timing makes sense. Gives time for the dust to settle and a replacement installed well in time for a summer of spending and a good pre season.

It also means, for any new man coming in, theres a partition between fergusons reign now, which, I know it's only a season but it does take alot of pressure off the new guy than if they had been coming in straight after ferguson. Now that the first one after fergie is over and done with, it feels like it lifts some of his overbearing shadow from the club.

LGJM got it spot on when I think he posted earlier Moyes was the sacrificial lamb. The first one after fergie was always on a hiding to nothing.

Moyes' career is going to stagnate now. He will not get a chance at a top club ever again. Mid table and relegation stragglers are where he will be confined to now, for the rest of his career. He'll do a really good job when he takes over these level of teams but i doubt he'll be adding any honours to his CV anytime soon.

The only surprise is why now and why did they do it in such a nasty fashion.

Though It's suprising in the sense you expected United to stick by their supposed principles and give him time.

It was deluded Man United nonsense that they backed managers. They had the most successful manager in British history who delivered pretty much constant success for 20 years. They didn't need to back him because he was always delivering success.

I expected a summer of transfers and then another crack next year, then if things were going tits up I expected they would pull the plug.

That's an expensive gamble on a manager who has shown absolutely nothing this season worthy of backing. He got the job solely because he was Ferguson's choice. He's offered nothing this season to justify that decision. So why gamble 100m on his new players when the probability is that someone new will have to be coming in anyway? He probably overspent on Mata, who might not be a title winning player but purely a cup winner and overspent on Fellaini. Neither signing has helped MU this season.

The timing makes sense. Gives time for the dust to settle and a replacement installed well in time for a summer of spending and a good pre season.

The timing makes sense because they are finally out of the running for Europe and that seems to have limited the pay out he gets. But sacking him on Tuesday and leaking it on the Monday is nasty.

Fergie's achievements are still there. Fergie will still be at the club. I think the pressure is just as much. In fact the fact that United are missing out on CL money means there's even more pressure. The new guy could have had this season as his transition season and probably kept them in the CL, now he's got to get them back into the CL and cope with having Fellaini and Rooney in his side on massive wages.

LGJM got it spot on when I think he posted earlier Moyes was the sacrificial lamb. The first one after fergie was always on a hiding to nothing.

I don't know what I wrote that makes you think that, but that's not my opinion.

I think Fergie appointed him mainly because he thought Moyes could become successful. But I think the biggest driver was the fact Moyes would be earning 4.5m a year while Mourinho or Guardiola would probably be on at least 8. Fergie was said to be on 6m a year. Walking out the door the most successful manager in British history and seeing someone walk in on 8m? I don't think he could do it.

IMO the major problem with those figures are that Fergie was chronically underpaid compared to what he did for MU. But that was caused because he was there 25 years and not really prepared to go anywhere else or use other offers to drive his wages up. He chose trophies over cash, IMO the polar opposite to that French git in north London.

The geordies or Spurs are both likely to have vacancies. Moyes as Newcastle manager and Kevin Keegan as his assistant manager to offer attacking ideas he struggles with.

He will need to change his moronic attitude to the cups though.

Not sure where this idea of 'united's principles' comes from

Ferguson was always outspoken about the sacking culture, and he has a point.

People (many United fans) say United have a history of not sacking managers, they don't they have a history of not sacking SAF. Docherty got sacked after winning the FA Cup, Sexton got sacked after something like 8 straight wins, but painfully dull football. Big Fat Ron got sacked after delivering relative success over a number of years. Ferguson and Busby had long tenures, other than them it's been a bit stop start.

The players haven't covered themselves with glory, but I don't buy this 'ageing squad' nonsense, it needs some money spending on it, especially replacing such a good partnership as Vidic & Ferdinand, but there are plenty of good players in that squad, and this time last year the same squad was a dodgy red card (IMO) and a spot of indecision away from a CL final and was in the process of romping home to a fairly comfortable PL title. The same squad has been supplemented to the tune of £80 + the emergence of Januzaj

Moyes was given a very easy ride by the majority of the media, he has been a complete and utter car crash of an appointment.

LGJM - disagree about Mata, but we've only seen the best of him in games where injuries have forced his hand selection wise. I think will prove to be a good signing, Fellaini however has looked a complete donkey

I think we have seen a couple of instances in the last year of what a good / liked / respect coach can achieve opposed to one who isn't those things.

The swing in the Ashes from the series in England to the one in Aus, granted Lehmann was in charge in England, but just as the ashes was about to start. England were comfortable, if not convincing winners. A couple of months later and the Aussies wipe the floor with England and clearly are putting it in for the coach with a couple of key players playing out of their skins.

The difference in the united players under Moyes as opposed to ferguson is clearly marked too. I know there was some serious dissatisfaction with the coaching methods and onus of defensive drills (that worked well), and Giggs just walking off the training pitch after hours of constant defensive work.

Re: Football Chat Thread PART II : Wed Apr 23, 2014 10:52 am
I see Liverpool are setting themselves up for being fleeced in the transfer market this summer.

Ian Ayre stated today "It will cost what it costs when we decide who the manager wants to buy". They are saying that once Brendan decides who he wants, they will go and get them, regardless of cost.

So if you are the Chairman that receives that call from Ayre your starting position is take the players value, double it and add £10m. Your £10m Spanish midfielder suddenly becomes £30m.

Why would someone so high up in the business side of a football team set himself up like that? If they wanted some PR spin, they could have stopped at 'We'll back Brendan this summer'.
