More Noise- Home and Away : Tue Apr 15, 2014 2:29 pm
I became a true, massive Giants fans about 2 years ago and have tried ever since to change the supporters to become one of the loudest, proudest fan bases in the SL. I have not succeeded so I have come up with a novel idea. Instead of changing current fans I am going to do everything in my power to get people to the games who want to sing and chant! And I encourage all of you to do it too!

the Claret And Gold Machine is ready to roll

sunday September 1st 2013, when a dream became a reality!!

Re: More Noise- Home and Away : Tue Apr 15, 2014 4:40 pm
no chance lad, we have been over this hundreds of times, the demographics of our fan base is different to most RL teams.
the vast majority of our support is families, elderly people who are happy to support the team in their own way.
most are happy to sit and watch the game and cheer and shout occasionally rather than sing and chant all game.

despite the result and performance at hull, we had a laugh but most people aren't into that sort of thing.would be nice to have a vocal fanbase who gets behind the team all game but our support just isn't like that.

Similar to you, I only got into the Giants cause relatively recently. 1st match about 2009, Got 1st season ticket 3 seasons ago etc. Prior to understanding the reasons behind the make up of the giants fan base I could never understand the 'apathy' from the stands.

It's not 'apathy' though. As previous post has said, the demographics of Giants fan base is markedly different to every other SL club. There is effectively a gap in the crowd make up of 16-30year olds. Have a look around at the next match. When you stop and look, it's quite startling how obvious this is. It's no surprise that the guys that are more vocal (that parts of that group are in that bracket or there or thereabouts).

That said, Home and Away, we can create or add to a decent atmosphere.

There's always ways to improve atmosphere. It can become difficult to not appear 'manufactured' though, and it know that irks a few on here.

Quite simple in how to make our crowd chant more and louder but almost impossible to pull off! All the "The noisy lot" at the back (you know who you are) need to sit more central rather hidden away at the back. You may say it won't help but guarantee it will, at least for some! Me, my family and friends sit in the middle at home games and love to sing at away games, me personally feels awkward to sing out loud at home because people around me might frown! You could say come up with you guys then and Sing or alternatively you could come in middle and let the chanting spread. Problem is season tickets seats but if we do make the play offs and get a home tie, I beg please try it and you may be surprised with the outcome.

Re: More Noise- Home and Away : Thu Apr 17, 2014 6:26 am
we were sat in the middle for the cup game, and we had people moaning even before the game started.
i heard one woman say to her bloke " i hope this lot aren't gonna be singing and shouting all game".... needless to say they tutted and sulked through the first half and moved away from us in the 2nd half. so doubt sitting in the middle would work, we sit at the back because there are like minded people up there who accept that people in that area are more vocal than the rest of the stand and don't always join in with the chants but don't sit and shake their heads and moan about it.

i would love for us to create an atmosphere similar to other grounds, we have done at times, but like i've said our fanbase is massively different to other clubs fanbase

spot on with the 16-30 years olds gap with our support, said it for a long time, we lost a generation of fans with this era when we were getting stuffed every week and bottom of super league/relegation..throw in the bulls and rhinos success plus football... i went with a bunch of lads my age with junior giants tickets in these days, all lost now, think 1 still goes now and again

look at any other clubs support and they are usually in 2 groups, young lads/lasses in that 16-30 group or families usually built around a 40/50 something.
look at ours its either over 50-70 yr olds or young families. those are the 2 main groups, then there are people around my age then a few dozen folk under 25 who go to games without their families.
as brearley said we lost generations of fans from the 80's onwards and we are still trying, we have done very well in attracting new supporters but those barren 25-30 years killed our fan base!

But I can see if from both sides. I don't mind the chanting and singing myself but can understand why some do. If the singing was kept light hearted or was in support of the Giants then fine but a lot of the songs are more about insulting the opposition and I find insulting and generally in poor taste.
And the chants of easy after we have scored a try when the game is still close is quite frankly embarrasing.
