I'm not really sure that he would prosper in any team. I've never seen anything from him in an England shirt that would suggest he would do better with superior players around him. He is about as flaky as your average tropical fish food.

Any suggestion that he was anything other than erratic today, is simply laughable. The error count was nearly into double figures.

As for Leeds, today was a little worrying. We failed to build any pressure, struggled with structure, squandered possession and the kicking game was rank. Our backs got us out of jail, they will not be able to that against better sides or, for that matter, Salford with a bit of improvement.

All true in the first half, a little less true in the second. Our halves were poor, three of our tries were from kick returns and one other a long-ranger from the first tackle. Excellent tries all. Our backs actually might get us out of jail even against the better sides, but they've got to be given the ball by methods other than kicks from the opposition.

Cover defence really good, but more clinical teams would have scored more tries after the worrying amount of central breaks Salford made.

Chase was masterful then appalling. Very erratic.

Did many things right making line breaks then killed it will greed, opting to carry on alone rather than using the support. In the rare occasions he did offer a ball it was a dead pass.

Harris, a glittering former halfback, will be fuming with the poor decisions Chase made in that game.

Chase is like Danny Brough, both have Dennis Moran syndrome. Look great in a lower team with lower expectations. Where every good thing they do is praised as the work of a genius and every bad thing they do is blamed on their team mates, but in a big side with high expectations the tables are turned and the good things they do are down to the outside backs or the props and anything bad they do is down to incompetence, and they look completely out of their depth.

Its how you get a thread where the halfback for a team who have just lost 32-4, managing only one try, is praised, where as the half backs for the team which is top and which has lost a total of one game all year scoring the 2nd most number of points (by only 8 points) have halfbacks who are too old, misfiring, playing in the wrong positions .

Did you even read the rest of the quote? Cas are where they are this season partly because they don't have Chase dominating everything, and spurning posession / opportunities because of erratic behaviour

Cas are where they are because they have the best coach in Super League, simple as that.

Re: Rangi Chase Red Devils : Tue Apr 22, 2014 11:42 am
I've come to think of Rangi Chase (right or wrong) as a bit of a Matt Le Tissier player. Mercurial, enigmatic, often brilliant, equally often poor or just bizarre, and not always the greatest team player. He is what he is, and that's what you pay for. What he gives you is off-the-cuff miracle RL, what he doesn't give you is structure and a safe and steady hand on the rudder. I'd be interested to see how he went in a title contending side.

As for Cas, they just look a much better team this year. Their cohesion, especially in attack when they hunt as a pack round any sign of a break or a gap is very, very impressive and very good fun (to my taste) to watch. Powell surely has to get a lot of credit for this. But I wonder how well Chase contributes to that kind of ethos? Great half backs make others around them look better. Cas have not so very many new players this year. Chase seemed to make a lot of them look like passengers when I saw them last year.

None of us can really answer those questions, and you could spin a good theory for and against the "Cas are better without Chase" argument. You could even write "FACT" at the end. But it would still only be theory and opinion.

I do know that Chase is one of the best players to watch in SL, and I also know that Cas are currently one of the best teams to watch in SL. As a neutral, I'm not sure much else matters.

Throughout yesterday's game Chase was the most exciting player to watch.
You never knew what he might do next, fortunately for us neither did his teammates.
Their lack of a decent chase for Chase's kicks gave us the momentum & the try scoring opportunities generally lacking from our own kicks.

Alot of Chase's shorter attacking kicks were only for Chase's attention only.

Maybe Tim Smith would have marched them round a bit better.

Chase created havoc at times for BOTH sides but I don't blame failure to take chances purely on Rogers team-mates he butchered enough plays on his own imo.
I'll also add that some of our 1 on 1 tackling was very poor despite how good Chase was at breaking the line.
Just as a side how many times (rightly so imo) has Burrow been criticised for running up his own arris or behind his own players = see some of Rangis moments yesterday.
