Think you are wrong on this Mo.

Club says we need £10k to a sponsor for this that or the other. The sponsor says ok and Gives the club £10k. No tax implications whatsoever.

So they donate and not sponsor, I would assume sponsorship has tax benefits for a company but donations to a non Charity don't?????
I would assume the sponsors list are sponsors not donators ????????????????????
