I completely agree. I posted at the end of last season that he simply cannot play again in a game of magnitude for us, he will be mercilessly targetted and exposed. He's been directly at fault for at least one try in each of the five Grand Final defeats. We know that when it gets down to the crunch that he will be found wanting. I don't care if there is no-one better available, I would sooner give the game time he has to one of the youngsters who might actually be able to perform in a big game somewhere down the line. Makinson for example has shown more in half a Grand Final than Meli has in the last five.

Spot on.

And what was with that mantra last season of investing in our young players? What a joke! Makinson himself was put on the wing when Gardner went off injured and has made that spot his own. I don't buy the argument that there is 'nothing out there'. Makinson came from nowhere; it is very likely there is someone else in our own back yard who could do just as good a job on the other side, given a chance.

At this rate next year we will be looking at Dad's Army redux but with Meli ensuring we win zip.

If the is nothing available then I'd give Meli another year while looking whaf will be available for 2014 season.

The two wingers I've heard we've spoke to don't exactly thrill me and I'd go with Meli before them.

Meli always gets stick off certain saints fans but he's the only back with and genuine attack.

I'd agree with this but I'm only interested in playing Meli if he's at centre. Waste of time on the wing because of the faults that people have already identified. We seriously cannot go into a Grand Final knowing that we are carry a player who could be critically exposed and that extends to Wellens playing full back next year as well.

I would prefer us to play Jones on the wing and sia or flangan or even wello in the centre then give meli a new deal

Take a look at the off contract wingers, buy it or not theres nothing out there - fact. Are you seriously suggesting we take a punt on a young academy player from elsewhere? If they were good enough they wouldnt be released. Similarly the kids in our own youth set ups arent ready. The likes of Swift are nowhere near physically ready to cope with consistent first team rugby, the rise & subsequent fall of Foster & the confidence problems suffered by Gaskell should tell you that. You cant fill a SL side with youth & inexperience it will kill them. Jones is an exception to the rule but physically more mature. Even Makinson mainly due to injury hasnt played more than 5-6 games concurrent for Saints.

Rush & the effort put into developing these kids wont risk their long term future or health for short term gain.

Do we want any players from Bradford? Sounds like they will all be available pretty soon.
