Brian Carney's Wakefield woes : Wed Apr 11, 2018 9:05 am
Wakefield woes
Wakefield went four wins from four at the start of the season but when the whistle went to conclude their 28-26 defeat to Leeds Rhinos, it signalled their fifth loss in a row. Now they've St Helens to come at the weekend - which is a deeply unattractive prospect.

But if you scratch below the surface, you will see that there is light at the end of a tunnel that's been growing ever darker for Chris Chester's side.

The defeats they've suffered have been narrow with the last three having a combined total of eight points. But Chester has a tough psychological task on his hands now in trying to convince Wakefield that they are still one of Super League's top sides and that they can snap out of this losing streak.

This is a hard job but it's one Wakefield are capable of doing and St Helens will be very wary of the threat they pose this weekend.

Five consecutive defeats is a huge hole to get out of, but I'm convinced - because of the closeness of their recent defeats - that come the end of the season Wakefield will be a top six side.

Summed up nicely. Things needs to change but we don’t have to ‘throw the baby out with the bath water’.

He's spot on and there's no need to panic. If we start getting pipped by 1 or 2 points when we play the teams we've already beaten, then there will be cause for concern.

Following saints though, we play;

Salford (A)- I would expect a win
Cas (A) - we could win this game, 50/50
Hull KR (H)- I would expect a win
Huddersfield (H)- I would expect a win
Widnes (A) - I would expect a win
Wigan (H)- 50/50 at worst, home advantage
Warrington (H) - 50/50 at worst, home advantage

So we could have another long winning streak following the saints game. Interestingly until we next play saints (A) after the aforementioned Warrington game, in which I would be less confident of a victory

I agree with him.
If we panic it could all go wrong. If we stick to our plan we can make it a minor blip.
It can work in our favour to be honest and make us underdogs again. A tag we wear very well.

I think it's positive that someone that seems to be respected and obviously knows a thing or two has some faith in us.

Nice to see a neutral being positive. To be fair there's not many here panicking either.

Loving your optimism and I hope you are right.
The important thing for Trinity is to beat the sides below us in the league and IF we can scalp a couple of the top 6, we should move up the table.
With Warrington having seemingly turned their fortunes around and with Leeds, Wigan Saints and Cas still going well, a top 4 spot is probably unrealistic but, we need to be as close to the 4 as we can, just in case the wheels fall off for our rivals.
5th/6th and maybe a decent cup run  would be an excellent season for Trinity and then keep progressing.

It's hard to believe that Trinity are where they are, given the absolute mess the club were in just a few seasons ago.

Come on Trin !

Re: Brian Carney's Wakefield woes : Wed Apr 11, 2018 1:24 pm
I think that's all fair enough what has been said. It's obviously just very frustrating the manner of defeats, as there seems to be almost the same pattern developing in games, particularly just after half time. The problem is, teams like Hull KR, Catalans etc have wins in them, we've just got to hope we are more clinical against those teams. I think we would have to win maybe 7 out of the next 8 to have any chance of 4th. If we finish 5th or 6th, fair enough, 7th or below then for me that would be disappointing with the squad we have. The Saints game does have the look of us upsetting the applecart and pulling off a bit of a shock, then maybe going on a winning run, here's hoping......

We are all gutted with the losses suffered these last few weeks but the above sentence sums it up nicely for me. Saints have come unstuck at our place a few times over the years & IF Roby is missing, then that's a big positive for us.
