Marshall Brace Helps Wigan to Hull Win Down Under

In a ground breaking initiative the Wigan Warriors and Hull FC decamped to the WIN Stadium in Wollongong, home of the St George Illawarra Dragons, for their round two Super League encounter, the first ever Super League game to be played outside Europe.
Both sides were looking for their second victory of the season after convincing opening weekend wins, FC over the Giants and the Warriors against the Red Devils. A win for either side would see them above Wakefield Trinity and into top spot in the league.
Wigan had skipper O'Loughlin back after missing last week with Frank-Paul Nuuausala the one making way. Hull made two changes with Danny Washbrook and Liam Watts for Jansin Turgut and Masimbaashe Matongo.

As a neutral was not a great game but have to give Hull a bit of credit for keeping it fairly close after injuries against a superior side. Paea was poor and probably earnt 7k per metre made? Talanoa wanting a penalty every time he's tackled ala Fonua and Connor niggling all game missing tackles for fun and then throwing tantrum at Shaul. I almost wish I was stood on that grassy knoll watching. Saying all that the fans looked like they were having a good time and it's quite a trip.

I think it was over as a contest as soon as Faraimo went off injured. Radford took a risk with a bench full of forwards and they were unlucky. Wigan could and should have been further in front at half time, Gildart bombed at least two tries with incorrect decisions and then Wigan also somehow blew a 3v1 overlap!

Wigan look pretty sharp in attack though, Williams is some player. I still scratch my head at the Sarginson signing though, the guy is utter sh*t.

Tough for Hull after losing the new winger and especially Houghton. It didn’t look the type of conditions were you’d want to be a couple of men down. We played well and our movement of the ball and running options look light years away from last year but we bombed so many opportunities (we didn’t create them to bomb though last year).

I can’t not end the post with what a total tool Jake Connor is. The lad is a good player but every time we play Hull he just seems to concentrate on needless niggling. Even his own teammates look like they think he’s a plank.

Fair enough assessment. We did well to hang in the game for as long as we did. The lack of rotation really hurt us. Didn't help that it was Watts first hit out since September too. Fatigue really got us in the end, and we just couldn't get that quick service and get the forwards rolling without Houghton.

Wigan looked good. Scoreline flattered us a touch. Could and should have been 30+ but not concerned given the circumstances. Thought we showed a lot of grit. Just hope none of the injuries are too serious.

Next weeks game is one Hull could probably do without after that. Both sides looked out on their feet at the end so you’d expect some rotation for the games.

I’d say both teams will be in with a shout of trophies this year. I was surprised to see many ‘experts’ tipping us for 6th or 7th place this year. It’s early days of course but I’m sure we’re better then that.

Good job we do have some squad players out for the trip - hopefully Green and Tuimavave will be fit and we can bring in Fash, Matongo, Turgut, Litten and Lane to freshen it up a bit

needless niggles, the irony! wigan players never do that do they?

well deserved win for wigan, game was over for us once faraimo went off, think we did well to keep it close for 70 minutes

Nobody in superleague is quite in the league of Connor and I include Sam Tomkins in that. As I say he’s a good player but he really needs to concentrate on playing to his full potential. The difference between a young Tomkins and the modern day Connor is that the young Tomkins could do the silly things and get away with it because that point he’d more then likely have already produced a number of game breaking moments. Whilst Connor is a ‘good’ player, he’s not good enough to be getting away with the ridiculous petulance that he’s showing.

As I say his own teammate (Shaul) looked like he thought he was a bit of a tool as well. That’s never a good sign!

Agreed I think Wigan will be the team to beat, that left edge is red hot, and as for the wingers how will Manfredi and Burgess get back in.

After this weekend I feel a lot better than after round one when Wigan tore us a new one, admittedly we were awful, but I feel Wigan should have been home and hosed by half time today. All that added with our decent performance at Wakey gives me more hope for the season ahead.
