On the train : Sat Nov 25, 2017 11:52 am
Travelling between Liverpool and Manchester, just passing close to Salford.

Overhearing a conversation along the lines of, "England are in the Rugby League World Cup Final, it's the first world cup. Mind you, I don't know why it's the called the world cup as there's only five teams".

That's the level of advertising and knowledge in the North West of England, on a line passing through the heartlands... How does this improve?

Who would be advertising in the North West of England? The games are been held in Australia and New Zealand!

They are clearly not Rugby League fans, the fact they are talking about the sport and know England are in the World Cup final next week is a massive positive, even if they don’t know the fine details of the tournament.

We got plenty of coverage on BBC breakfast this morning, Jon Wilkin was in the studio.

Tbf, I'm aware the Cricket ashes are on but I couldn't confidently tell you the name of a single player competing or who is defending them. I'm not a cricket fan - nothing against it and I hope those that are, are enjoying it. But despite the media coverage, I'm just not interested. I'm sure it is similar with RL for these train passengers.

Actually, quick question: without looking it up, do you know who the current cricket World Cup holders are?

Me, unsurprisingly: no.

Don't worry, from what I have seen most people on Salford struggle to count to 5, let alone more. Thickest people in Europe.

It is a very good point actually, a reminder that we need to work on our own house before we can be too critical of others.

That a couple of villages are missing their idiots?

Sorry but you can't spoon feed everyone. The internet means it's not difficult for interested people to check a few basic facts. What's annoying is that they clearly didn't do that, but are then happy to make judgements based on zero knowledge. Pair of muppets.

£20 a ticket and £15 on beer and merchandise.....so an away fan is worth £35. At best, 1,000 is the average away support split across 11 rounds and I am being really generous here, so Toronto, replacing say Wakefield will cost a SL club £35,000.
The minimum turnover of a SL club is £4,000,000 so Toronto instead of Widnes is worth less than 1% of a SL clubs turnover.

There are many valid reasons for and against expansion into America, but "AWAY FANS" isn't one of them. :BEAT:

I believe that West Indies are the ODI world Champs and 'stralya are the 20/20 champs.....and I have no interest in cricket, but here in NZ all sports are covered well in the media. League has to try a bit harder here given that the AB's are treated like royalty, but the Warriors counter this with TV adverts and a lot of "visible" advertising across Auckland, but Cricket, 1st & 2nd tier Union, Soccer, Netball, Cycling (it is a massive sport/pastime here), Golf, Basketball, American leagues including baseball and NFL........there is a thirst for information about sports here and we even have a 30 minute Sports program Monday to Friday on Prime time TV FTA that covers the days events around the world.........most Kids here play more than one sport at weekends and I believe it's the same in 'stralya
......In England, I seem to recall that unless it was Football, you'd have to actually find the info yourself by web searching or buying a newspaper...and only a few kids would be playing anything other than football and if they were it was usually during school time and not at the weekends.

Nah the other way round mate, Aus are one day Champs beating NZ and WI's beat England in the T20 WC.
I've followed England as well as Yorkshire for years, even followed them to places like India, WI SA and have been on a couple of Ashes tours. Cricket is still popular in England and Test matches are just about always full, one of the few Countries that they are still. Similarly, one day and T20 games get packed crowds for most visiting teams.
If you know where to look in summer, cricket fields tucked away around Cities and Villages there's plenty of kids and men playing cricket. There are loads of Clubs around Yorkshire as well as the rest of the Country, in places like Birmingham for example. But if you don't play for a local Club, it's played in most Private/Grammer schools.

The thirst for sport is similar here, I'm surprised by your comment tbh. Football is obviously king but RU, Cricket, Golf, RL, Athletics, Motorsports like F1, WSB, BSB, Tour de France and Indoor Cycling, (plus like you say Cycling, in general, is a big past time over here, whether that's riding on the road or mountain biking), obviously cycling is even more popular, like other sports when the Olympics come around, plus even rowing get decent TV time. Then there's 'sports' like Darts that get 1000's watching live in the Premier League Darts and it's popular on Sky and also Snooker that is fairly big over here.

I watch US sports and the NFL has held games over here and packed them out every time and there's even been the talk of a franchise in London, plus we can watch just about all NBA and MLB games. I don't think it may be as popular as it is down under but it obviously as it's fans over here and may get more viewers just down to the size of the Country.
