England should have a real chance to get to the final but on current form I can see PNG giving them problems and I can't really see them beating Tonga. As Kevin Sinfield remarked "This is where Wayne Bennett needs to earn his money".

I think the jury is definitely out on Bennett. I can't really believe his selections sometimes and have to remind myself that he is one of the greatest coaches in the world. I feel sorry for the lads constantly being played out of position. There was a time in the second half when our two centres were Bateman and Williams. Really???

NZ v Tonga now that`s a final I am really looking forward to.

I agree that Brown was decent against the Aussies in the four nations last year (NickyKiss, think you missed him off your post), but I think we should only really be having a player that age in the squad if he is a starter. Otherwise, it's better to have a slightly worse younger player (if that is how Williams is perceived) as reserve, with a view to development IMO.

Willing to eat my words here, I thought Brown was pretty good, albeit against poor opposition. I would continue with the same 1, 6 and 7 next week against PNG.

I think you are correct on that. I too thought Brown did okay, but the French were indeed very poor. Widdop went well at Full back.

It'll be a totally different kind of game next week. So far PNG have been incredibly physical and quick also. Their game has been littered with mistakes though and they really only scraped past the Irish. It will be different in Melbourne too. They will miss their partisan following. Still, it will be a tougher game than Lebanon or France were able to offer.

I think George might have been a better pick because he is a better runner than Gale or Brown but it seems that he is fourth choice in the halves for Bennett. I feel sorry for George as he had to play hooker, stand off and centre in his time on the pitch, not an ideal situation in which to press your claims. I doubt we will see him again in the tournament.

Williams hasn’t done enough either in the second half of his Wigan season or the limited time he’s had in this World Cup to deserve a place in the QF team. I think Bennett really did want him to impress as he’s got the most X factor out of all England halves and he’s a game changer but for some reason it just hasn’t happened for him over the last 3 months.

Williams form for me didn’t deserve a call up.

I’d much rather have seen Snyde in the squad. You could say the same for Brown however he has taken his chance and probably played himself into a strong contender to start vs PNG.

Tough on Williams has he hasn’t been given enough settled game time to really prove himself or play his way in to the tournament.

I know I sound like a broken record but once again I think our style of play has a lot to answer for in relation to the likes of Farrell, Gildart and Tomkins getting an opportunity to go to the World Cup. More worryingly I’d be concerned it is also affecting our ability to recruit English players as we have failed to get the best out of established internationals with our tactics.

The next England team will be Bennett’s strongest. I doubt Williams will be anywhere near it. Think Bateman will be very lucky to be in there too.

In relation to Williams nobody can doubt his toughness but for me he has lost something probably confidence he seems to lack the swagger of a top class half. I also find him very one dimensional. Running across field and trying a big step isn’t what we want from a half and the little kick in behind the opposition right winger is also very predictable now and proving less profitable.

We all I think including the club acknowledge the style of play needs to change and hopefully Williams and Tomkins will be the biggest benefactors of that change, as marquee players they are not on current form.

For the next game I'd go:

Widdop (By far the best FB available)
McGil
Watkins
Percy (Far more to offer in attack than Bateman from the centres)
Hall
Brown (We looked far better with Brown at 6)
Graham
Roby (I don't get the Josh Hodgson hype. I watch the NRL week in week out and still don't get it)
Taylor (For me Hill has been poor)
Currie
McMek (Great runner, strong in defence)
Sam Burgess
----------------------------------
Lockers (Can spell from the bench. He can cover 6/7 and anywhere in the pack)
Bateman (Can cover centre or anywhere in the back row)
Wals
Burgess

Agree with you about the team, though. I thought McM showed up well against France. That's not saying much, admittedly, but still...

I can't imagine Bennett would go with only one dummy-half, though. Mind you, her's been playing Sam Thaiday there!
