Which U20s is next for the first team? : Thu Jun 28, 2012 1:54 pm
Just for those who go to watch the U20s play - who should be the next player(s) to be brought into the first team?

We all know that the first team has a few elder statesmen in its ranks, so we could do with blooding some young guns to get them ready for the rigours of SL for when we do need them - do you agree?

I think you have inadvertently raised a future problem for the wolves.

In order to develop their skills, GOB, Dwyer and Currie will all need game time next year. I can not see them turning from caterpillar to butterfly in one season. And when they are playing, they will make mistakes and lack the skills of our mature players - so we need to be selective in playing them, particularly for big matches. So how much headroom do we have to bring in further U20's ? Its a problem, particularly when we already have a talented squad.

Increasingly, we are seeing our U20's being DL'd to Championship sides. I suspect the trend in 2013 will be for some of them to be loaned to SL sides to ensure they gain experience at that level and to accommodate all the talent that we seem to have.

To answer you question though, I would like to see Mendelka (bad injury last season), Bridge jr, and Laithwaite (21 ?) get a run out. If he progresses at Swinton, Glen Riley as well. But there is a lot of talent out there.

Gareth O'Brien is yet to sign a new contract. Are we sure he wants to stay if we sign Chase.

I think Laithwaite has gone on loan to HKR, so he'll be getting some SL experience after being at Leigh, which will hopefully put him into the frame for Warrington from next year.

As for Chase, I hope he doesn't sign for us. Nothing against him, and I like his style of play, but it is a bit one dimensional and he does come across as a bit lazy. Mind, Kelly Shelford was lazy and he could beat some teams by himself on his day! Also, I think Chase does go missing in big games (especially during internationals) and I'm hoping we get to see teh Wire in big games more and more.

James Saltonstall looks very good when I've seen the U20's. Reminds me a bit of Allan Bateman.
