Matty Smith has played in a Grand Final as a young player and is certainly a better player now. Wigan currently have Mellor and Russell out on loan at other Super League clubs ready to come back as better players. (Spoke to young Russell last week in Sugar Mill. Nice kid, bit of a midget, cant hold his beer).
Potentially Wigan, England and Super League could be stronger next season for losing the 2 overseas players.
But I was using Leuleuai and Finch as examples, hence my use of "the likes of". Interesting point of view to think that Wigan will be improved by losing those 2 and that Smith will be operating next year at a level above what they do now, not one that I share. I think that we'll see the impact of players like Brett Hodgson, Adrian Morley and Steve Menzies retiring (signed on deals in the UK before the NRL cap increase) and perhaps the best British players are tempted to follow Graham and the Burgesses (ultimately Tomkins, maybe Briscoe, for example), so the absolute quality will decrease. In which case your prediction of Salter and co climbing the steps at Wembley next year, I think, could well be realised.
Excellent reference to Russell's drunkenness BTW. Were you sharing a tap water with Sandy?
