Toronto Wofpack : Mon Apr 10, 2017 5:29 pm
Should Toronto have been allowed to start life in the Championship as opposed to Championship One?

It's got little to do with fairness ...
If the RFL had known then what it knows now, it would have put them in the Championship and expand the division.
The reason it didn't is that the last thing it wants with their expansionism is failure.
Putting teams in our division is a win/win situation.
Putting them in the Championship COULD result in failure (very unlikely, since the RFL aren't gonna let numpties into that division) but possible ... not good!

The RFL have said it welcomes money men to come and give it a go.

All they have to do is change the rules the season before as soon as they get the application and they can put them anywhere straight into Superleague if they want as long as nobody is pushed out.

They can and do what they want.

The mystery is why clubs stand for it.

Like the typo.

Is this team on dual reg with Toronto Woolpack? You know, those guys that play their UK matches in Emmerdale?

I think we need to be told...

S/O's compromise of expanding the Championship would be marginally better than relegating three teams or only promoting one last season but what would the criteria be for not starting at the bottom?

We could fold, start up again as Doncaster RLFC 2017, have a money man behind us who is as rich as the Toronto top man and make similar claims that we should start life in the Championship because we are rich enough to snap up all the best players.

I strongly disagree with all franchise-type arrangements. Promotion and relegation should be based on on-field performance, not the depth of your pockets. The Championship was a league of doom when there was no hope of reaching Super League unless you won the Northern Rail Cup and the League over a set period of time. All that happened was that the top clubs' better players moved up to Super League whilst the best clubs got left behind.

For the credibility of the game there should be no queue jumping. Achievements must be achieved through on-field merit only.

In terms of Toronto, their overseas quota seems to be endless. Should they not be limited in the number of imports they can have?

The rules have been "adjusted" for Toronto, they can have unlimited EU players (to me these should count as imports) they have the same 2 players overseas quota as we do, and they have an adjustment to allow an unlimited number of North American players.

See http://www.rugby-league.com/operational-rules/mobile/index.html#p=100 for more info.

Also I think the reason "we stand for it" is that I believe that SL clubs votes count as double what CL and CL1 clubs do, so they win everything by a landslide.

That's basically the issue, Steve: EU players are not classed as being part of their overseas quota. Maybe some dispensation to allow them, say, 5 EU players would have been a reasonable compromise. I wonder if the full dispensation would apply if they were in Super League?

In the interests of fairness, a team from Canada must surely be made up predominantly of Canadian players.

I don't say that because I wish them any malice. I hope they do well and spread the game to parts of the world we aren't reaching at the moment as the game needs as much of a boost as possible... but fairness can't be ignored at all costs.

By assembling a squad of journeymen (albeit better than our journeymen) are they doing anything to develop the game in Canada? I applaud the efforts of Hemel, Coventry, Gloucester et al as they are at least bringing in local players rather than just signing mercenaries.
