Any business needs to have a plan ... well done to Club Doncaster for declaring their intentions.
In the great scheme of things, I believe the aim of getting the Rovers into the Championship is a slightly easier challenge than getting the Dons into Super League. Unless the wheels fall off in the second half of this season, the Rovers will be halfway there. Taking the next step (to the Championship) won't be easy but should be possible as they'll have seasons 17-18, 18-19, 19-20, and 20-21 in League One to give therm four attempts of gaining another promotion.
Getting the Dons into Super League within the intended time frame is tougher. If we don't get out of Championship 1 this season, I would suggest it would be almost impossible. The timetable will probably have to look like this:
2017: Promotion from Championship 1
2018: Stabilise in the Championship (top 8 finish)
2019: Go full-time to challenge for a top four finish (probably finishing in the top 6)
2020: Invest more money to improve on the 2019 performance. Make the top four (but probably miss out on promotion)
2021: Top four finish required with success in the Middle Eights to gain promotion.
2022: Playing in Super League
Even the mighty Leigh needed two attempts in the Middle Eights to gain promotion and they'd dominated the Championship. It's hard to see any side getting into Super League at their first attempt in the play-offs, although I suppose it just depends whether any of the Super League teams hit financial problems (as maybe the case if Dr Koukash departs Salford).
Being realistic, with the likes of Toronto and Hull KR aiming to get into Super League, the competition will be tough. There are others to be feared too. We have an ambitious plan; let's hope the Rovers and the Dons achieve their aims.
