Keepmoat-Stadium Plans : Wed May 16, 2012 12:56 pm
http://www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk/new ... -1-4553666

DONCASTER Rovers are set to take over the running of the town’s financially troubled Keepmoat Stadium.

Council bosses have said that Rovers taking overall control of the complex is the only “solution” to dealing with the taxpayer-funded venue’s spiralling losses.

Financial crisis has plagued the Keepmoat since it opened six years ago at a cost of £32 million - excluding the land value. Stadium Management Company (SMC) which runs the venue has racked up losses of £2.1 million.

The Free Press exclusively revealed that Rovers were talking to the council about taking over the running of stadium. A report this week recommends the council allow Rovers to take over the Keepmoat for 99 years - in exchange for £100,000 a year rent.

Simon Wiles, the authority’s director of finance, said: “The only potential viable solution is to wind up the SMC and give greater management control, usage rights and security of tenure to Doncaster Rovers, in return for them taking responsibility for the loss making facility and paying a rental to the council.”

Rovers chairman John Ryan declined to comment as negotiations were ongoing - but he promised a full statement once the talks were complete.

While talks are ongoing, up to eight staff are expected to be made redundant as the SMC seeks to make further savings. Overspends on staff have been upto £600,000 a year.

The report recommends allowing Rovers to take over the stadium for a further 80 years in addition to the 19 years remaining on the current agreement.

An issue with not extending the deal is that the council has guaranteed that if the SMC does not exist taxpayers would have to pay for Rovers to use another stadium.

The deal would also include a longer term deal on Rovers’ training ground in Cantley.

The club would have the chance to raise extra cash from the site. Suggestions include boosting income from installing solar panels and making greater use of the bars, gym and Soccer Centre.

Mayor Peter Davies has previously branded the Keepmoat “an albatross around the neck” of ratepayers and said it was “likely” to end up in Rovers’ control.

Despite efforts to make savings, Mr Wiles has concluded that the SMC will continue to lose up to £400,000 a year.

Rovers currently pay £281,000 to the SMC but external advisors have said that if it renegotiated, then the club should be paying up to £600,000 - which is “considerably” in excess of what Rovers would be willing to pay.

Analysis has concluded that all the stadium’s main tenants - Rovers, the Belles, the Dons and the athletics club - do not pay anything like the true cost.

The report also guarantees that any contract with Rovers would include a written agreement to guarantee the Dons, athletics club and the Belles continued use of the stadium.

In March Mr Wiles said the SMC was no longer a “going concern”.

Other options the council had explored included knocking the stadium down and selling the land.

Thank God I'm an atheist.

if was on the Dons' board I would need a lot more flesh on the bones than that. I would want to know about our rental agreement and that the Rovers don't have any control over it.

Interesting that:

1) The Knights are moving games to Friday nights
2) The Ex Chief Exec of the Knights was at the Keepmoat on Sunday

If we were to stay would we be kicked out completely for pitch resurfacing. I'm suprised no one has commented on this yet, but it was disgusting of the SMC to strip the pitch and reseed it in the same week we were playing. Why couldn't they have waited until this week.

I feel the momentum towards a move to Castle Park is growing.

I don't see how it could.be in rovers interest to make it impossible for the Dons to remain there by raising rent etc. They will have to find the money to pay their own rent and having an empty stadium with nothing else going on will not help in any way. The contribution from other sports using the facilities can only help them surely, whatever that may be

I don't feel that at all. The Chief Execuctive of the Dons will be up to speed on this I am sure. Cannot see for the life of me The Rovers short changing The Dons or the Belles. Two revenue streams lost straight away. Lets wait and see shall we. I am putting all my trust into our Management on this one. If we get promotion then the increase in revenue for our home games goes up and for me the Keepmoat is vital for that and not Castle Park.

Re: Keepmoat-Stadium Plans : Wed May 16, 2012 7:53 pm
The report said that the "tenants" are being massively undercharged. When the stadium was first mooted the rovers wanted it just for themselves. If the tenants are valued then surely it would be better for a steering group of tenant representatives to oversee the running.

The mention of this sporting doncaster model isn't what is needed. The Rovers should not run the other clubs. Collectively the clubs should run the stadium with one posdibly taking the lead.

I know it has been mentioned before but what is the feeling about a move to Castle Park now. The ground has excellence corporate facilities, decent beer, is more accessible than the Keepmoat and being smaller you are right on top of the action making for a better atmosphere.

I live quite close to castle park, and it would be ok........for now, but if the Dons want to improve and have thoughts of top division rugby at some point then the Keepmoat is a much better option, better facilities, location etc. Not to say its a bad ground, it isn't, but the keepmoat is far superior.

Unless one of us wins the Euromillions we're not going to be in Super League any time soon, so i think that Castle Park will be far more suited to our requirements as hopefully a succesful Championship club. Also with a smaller 'Tattersfield' size ground we should get a better atmosphere.
If we ever get a really big game there's nothing to stop us renting KM as a one off.
Does anyone know the capacity at Castle Park?

I was careful to say top division and not super league, because i think the way things are going super leagues days are numbered. There seems to be a growing momentum for a return to promotion and relegation. Think capacity of castle park is around 3 thousand
